#276 – Careful eye

Monday, October 12th, 2009

A new strip.

I wanted to post more about Bananas!* and the banana industry but I just don’t have the time. I still hold my stance though. I know the case was thrown out but that has more to do with the amount of money Dole has to defend itself, and how corrupt the ambulance chasing lawyer the plantation workers had, then how innocent Dole is.

  1. Jimmy Says:

Your comic is so subtle! You can see the quiet desperation in Tina: she’s so worked up in this that corner-of-the-eye recognition = IMMEDIATE TARGET LOCK!!

    Love it!

It is too bad there are those kinds of plaintiffs’ lawyers out there. I worked for some honest ones a few years ago and loved every minute of it: we’d help all kinds of people who were in a really bad situation.

  2. Joelle Says:

Oh no!!! What’s TINA doing in that train!!!! :O

  3. I say Says:

love the white and colour scheme of the drawings!!

You never know what you’re going to throw in the story line. LOVE it!

  4. emmaemma Says:

omg i didn’t even NOTICE tina. dundunDUN

  5. Martina Balagovic Says:

Maybe this is the one chance for anders to be in a bad situation and NOT try to fix it by sleeping with someone else. I mean, if he and Maria do end up together, she can’t keep him from ever noticing any female again. He needs to figure out it’s possible to see an attractive girl who wants to sleep with you and not do anything.

I hope the baby’s ok… Even though I’m a bit scared of Anders getting back with Maria just because of the baby…

Very beautiful and deep as usual, Rene :)

  6. Weronika from Poland Says:

co mog? powiedzie?.. jestem zakochana w twojej sztuce!
(what can i say.. i’m in love with your art!)

    buziaki :* (kisses:*)

  7. John K Says:

The second panel may be the most powerful panel of the whole series! Beautifully done

  8. Hanna Says:

What hospital? In the direction of Farsta Strand? I’m confused… Söder Sjukhuset?

  9. Suzanne Says:

Sweet Mother of Pearl! Tina? OMGosh….what the hell is going to happen now.

  10. uthor Says:

I dig what you did with the colors here. You should design train stations for a living.

  11. Tati Says:

OMG! I’m on the edge of seat! I can’t wait for the next part. You’re doing such an amazing job. I have nothing else to add.

  12. Samantha Says:

    Oh no!! Not Tina!!

  13. Mae Says:

Oh my god, Tina, FUCK OFF. D:

  14. Higgy Says:

I dont think Anders will be with Maria for the baby because she was pregnant when he was fucking someone else in the first place.

I do think Tina is a nutcase, I can tell buy the stressed out crazy look on her face that she has all the time and how attached/obsessive she is with Anders.

  15. Mud Says:

I can’t wait for the next one!

I’m dying to know what happens. I love this comic.

  16. Cara Says:

    Ughhhh Tina, not now!

  17. ellie Says:

tina… what a nut. you can tell. Can’t she just stop being a needy you-know-what? I know anders and maria are bad sometimes but tina…. blegh!

  18. Magpie Says:

Oh my goodness, that is a Tina. What could she be plotting in her lecherous little head?

  19. Ambee Says:

I just adore the last panel. Anders looks… oh, just distraught. I do like Anders, although I haven’t felt for him much lately. That last panel makes my heart ache, however.

Tina, always so desperate. I wonder if she’s just shocked and alarmed or if there’s something else going on in her head. She’s such a pitiful thing.

  20. Frida Ulvegren Says:

Gud vad fint det blev med tunnelbanan! Man känner verkligen igen allt! :)

haha, nice to put a pregnant woman in front of him in the cart!

@Hanna: he gets of at Skanstull and takes blue-bus nr 3 three stops to Södersjukhuset.

    //Söderbönan ;)

  21. charmaine Says:

Yikes! This is going to be awesome!!

  22. Greensis Says:

Isn’t Tina on a train going in the other direction? Sort of ships passing in the night?

  23. Zomara Says:

Great work as always, and i am glad to see that you are better. Its that the pre-color of Maria in the second panel?

  24. Dominique Says:

Hah, Tina’s so pathetic that I’m sure she someone got a hold of Ander’s sperm and went invitro on him.

  25. Chloe Says:

Oh, wow. The first and second and third and fourth and fifth and sixth panels of this comic are so beautiful. Anders’ face just makes me want to cry. I NEED to know what’s up with the baby. I NEED more of this gorgeous, sentimental, beautiful comic.

And personally, I wouldn’t mind Anders getting back together with Maria. If Anders cleans up his act of course. Maybe it’s just the beauty of this comic making me crazy. :) Good work, Rene!

  26. brent Says:

hang on – which one’s tina again? Is she maria’s half-sister from the home town??

  27. Becca Says:

Oh man, when I noticed Tina in the bottom panels, I nearly shrieked in surprise terror.

But I have to say, nicely done. :)

  28. Jill Says:

Heheh I had some trouble finding Tina at first. It was like Where’s waldo, with Tina.

  29. Ashley Says:

it seems to me that Tina just happened to be in the terminal and noticed Anders – not stalking him

  30. humanoftheyear Says:

d’aww he’s wearing the same pixies shirt from the flashback

  31. A.O. Says:

Oh man, everyone’s knocking on Tina.

I think Tina is a perfectly fine person, and I hope that she grows up, moves on, and uses her recent experiences to become a better person.

    :)

  32. invertebrate Says:

Agree with Greensis and Ashley — Tina just happened to be sitting in the other train that just pulled up, most likely heading in the opposite direction. Hmm, and I didn’t even realize the metaphoric value of the situation until I wrote it out. Cool!

Of all the amazing artwork from today’s strip, my favourite part is Anders’ clenching left hand from panels 1 and 3. What a beautiful, realistic detail to convey his anxiety. I also like how none of the other passengers have faces.

  33. invertebrate Says:

uh, panels 1 and 4, sorry.

  34. Rob Says:

wow… is it just me… or does anders care about something other than his penis at the moment?

  35. Carl-E Says:

How on earth can you tell it’s Tina? All you see is an eye and a bit of profile. Could be anyone, I thought it was just someone whos eye he caught in his distress as they sat on opposing trains at a station.

Of course, it makes perverse sense that it *would* be Tina, but I don’t really see it.

But yeah, I especially like the emotional distortion of the train station in panel 2, and his oh-so-expressive eyes in the two panels near the end.

This is fantastic! Knowng that it ends soon makes it all the more poignant.

  36. SFC Says:

The lady next to him on the train kinda scares me

  37. Nicole Says:

    TINA!!

Everything is coming together now. The ball is rolling, god,the excitement is killing me. You are so awesome Rene! :D

  38. Tyler Says:

Dang, he gets reception in a subway station?

Anyway, insert obligatory, and completely deserved, gushing kudos [here].

  39. Oedlan Says:

    What. The. Frak.

Why in the name of all that is holy does he not take a cab?
    He can certainly afford it!

  40. Greensis Says:

@Oedlan: Taking a cab in Stockholm might take longer than the subway. Old city, lots of water/islands/bridges, lots & lots of dead ends, oneway streets etc. The subway just cuts through underneath.

Sometimes it’s not just about money.

  41. Kim Says:

I laugh at everyone wigging out on the last page.
“ignorance is hurting my brain’ please…
It was meant to be a joke, do you really think an Australian would have anything against mexicans?
    Here’s racism for you.
I like to run boongs over with my car cause they are dirty, and smell, and take money from the government. And have smaller brains then we do. Americans are convoluded assholes who need to stick a nuke up their ass. English need to brush their teeth. Spanish need to take a shower. Mexicans, chinese and indians need to stop breeding and bitching about racism. White people just need to die in general. Canadians speak funny, and I did your mom last night.

I’m not racist, I hate everyone equally ^_^

Knowing my last experience on trains, Anders won’t get there in time :(

  42. Damaris Says:

Thanks for having them call each other. I found it pretty unrealistic that the two would text each other on a day like this.

  43. AJ Says:

    Lovin’ it Kim!

  44. Oedlan Says:

@Greensis: Which hospital? From where? If he’s going from Konstfack to Danderyd, he should be taking the Red line to Mörby Centrum, right?

  45. Rene Engström Says:

Fun fact for Stockholmers: Anders left the holdings cells near Rådhuset Station towards Central Station, then he took the green line to Skanstull on his way to Söder Sjukhuset.

He hasn’t attended Konstfack in many years (those are all flashbacks).

  46. Oedlan Says:

@Rene That makes thing more clear =)

{{{{Rene}}} I hope things are going “your way” now, keep up the superb work!

  47. Amitoj Says:

Are those advertisements at the station about Anders’ exhibition? Wow, anders sure publicizes himself well ;)

  48. Dave Says:

If you check out panels 4,5 and 6 you’ll see tina is on a train pulling up next to anders’s. That would have to be phychic level planning if she was stalking him. lol

Keep up the good work Rene :)

  49. Wings_of_wrath Says:

Heh. I used to live on Ringvagen, so Skanstull was my stop… And obviously, this page takes place in the short run between T-Centralen and Slussen, because that is the only part of the network where you can have two trains going in the same direction side by side (the green and red lines). Also since the 4th panel has a white background I think they are on the surface rather than in one of the tunnels, so the most likely place would be somewhere near Gamla Stan. Just my two öre.

  50. Dominique Says:

    Hatin’ it, Kim!

  51. Sammi Says:

ohhhhh. i see it now! all i was with this little wandering eye! i thought it was some weird creeper person, but i can see tina now. the suspense is killing me!

  52. splitterpart Says:

Anders is just a man. Even more, he is just human. I can not say that I have ever been in his situation, but I have been in some though ones. Hours, days, years later I look back and I say to myself “Self, you were a jerk” or “self, you could’ve done that better”.

Bottom line, I love his character and I love your work Rene. The art is great but the soul, the humanity, that you pour into your characters goes way beyond what are eyes see on the page. We can taste the copper flavor of fear in his mouth as he sits on the train, we can feel Maria’s heartbreak when he cheats on her, we are chilled to the bone when she cries in the snow back home.

    Way to tell a story.

    Thank you!
    Dziekuje!

  53. Joshy Says:

In response to, well, just about everyone…over the course of this comic we’ve seen that both maria and anders can be total fuck ups. But throughout the story it seems as though they have both developed enough moral integrity for me to honestly say that a child coming into their lives would totally set them straight.

    Rene,
whatever you have planned for the storyline I’m sure it will be amazing.
Can’t wait til the next one!

  54. Emily Says:

Joshy, I don’t agree. You can’t have a kid and hope it will be the catalyst for change in your life. That being said, as much as Anders doesn’t seem like a good boyfriend to have… he seems like he’d be a good dad.

As far as the woman eyeing him from outside of the train… I just assumed it was because his name is plastered all over the newspapers due to his latest mess. It does kinda look like Tina though…

  55. Mal Says:

I love how the minute Anders sees that pregnant woman across from him, his heart just sinks.

  56. Todd Says:

I noticed when he was in jail (in the present) Anders had a plain t-shirt and in the past he had the Pixies shirt, and in these panels he has the Pixies shirt, and I don’t think he was supposed to have changed after leaving jail (which we never saw…). Could this be a trick and the Maria stuff is in the present and the Anders stuff in the past (like the episode of Lost with Sun and Jin where you were supposed to think it was at the same time but they were at different times)?

  57. answerdog Says:

wow, the bananas* film looks interesting! You’re lucky you guys get to see it in Sweden!

Also, this story is getting crazy. I can’t wait to see how you draw the baby! :D

  58. joshlyn Says:

this made me tear up just a little…
    very nice job love

  59. Nate Says:

AHH I THOUGHT THE WOMAN NEXT TO ANDERS WAS A CHAIR. you’re right, she’s terrifying!

& Kim, I love that you don’t have the balls to respond to people on a page where the people you’re speaking to are more likely to see it. Also, you’re very clever.

  60. David Says:

Tina’s totally going to pull the emergency stop.

    Anders looks so sad.

  61. dungeonmaster11 Says:

Tension upon tension! How will it all end?

And y’know, when I first looked over this strip, I wasn’t being all that observant, so it wasn’t until my second look that I noticed Tina in the last two panels. And might I say, that last panel is terrifying. I mean, it’d be one thing if it was just one of those things that catches you off-guard and shocks you; but every time I look at that panel, I feel a chill of fear run down my spine. The story was building up pretty tensely already, but then to have Tina not only spot Anders, but to also have her look like she’s so crazed, like she’s finally hit rock bottom? I’m scared for all of them. Fantastic work, as per usual!

  62. Joshy Says:

    @emily….that’s pretty much what I was saying…

  63. street fruit Says:

why is everyone ragging on tina?
yes, she did some crazy things, but she really is just a sad girl with low self esteem who has been abused/manipulated by men, who thinks that sex is the way to find love and doesn’t know how to stand up for herself in any empowering way.
i’m not saying that what she did to anders was right at all – because it’s not- but i think what he did to her was pretty selfish also.

  64. Sharlene Says:

what an incredible emotional rollercoaster in just two pages. I’m also amazed that his cell phone gets service on the subway. Wonderful

  65. Lindsay Says:

I didn’t even notice Tina the first time I saw this strip! I wonder whats gonna happen now…?

  66. Kim Says:

    @ Nate

Not have balls? Hardly. Just you know, who has time to go back and read something on a previous page?
    Old news.

That, and you gotta figure these people lingers on these comment pages anyway. They appear to be the type that have to tell everyone how much they care about something.
Care about it, but do nothing anyway. Strike anyone as a bit odd?

If you want to get on your high horse and preach about the injustices in the world, fine. But don’t jump on my ass, because I have the humour to point out that your preaching achieves jack all.

  67. kathryn Says:

i feel bad for tina, she had a it rough once but that is between her and johan. i’d like to know how their story worked out, it’s very interesting and probably is the cause of tina being a total loon in the present. not that anders is a saint but tina is a nutty, clingy disaster fairy.

  68. Matt Says:

Just read from no.1 all the way through non-stop. Fantastic.

  69. Birdie Says:

I’m so glad that you’re taking your time. I would much rather have a beautifully done comic than to have a less-than-awesome rushed one.

Granted, I’m not sure you’re capable of making something less-than-awesome.

I always hate when people do that with movies or video games. They just rush to get the final product out because of the demand and then everybody still ends up unsatisfied with the results.

So keep it up! You’re lovely.

  70. Daniel Says:

@Sharlene and Tyler: You have full 3G coverage in the entire Stockholm metro system. Both on stations and trains.

  71. Tyler Says:

@Daniel Not that anyone is likely to read posts this old but… Damn! Universal healthcare AND 3G underground? Hooray for socialism! Moving to Sweden (not really, but still).

  72. Dubby Says:

HOLY SHIT, TINA’S IN THE WINDOW. I so didn’t see that.
