#250 – Baby or fruit sallad?
Friday, June 26th, 2009My boyfriend has a friend who is a cartoonist, whom I have never met, but everytime I see his inks, his incredible, wonderful inks and his incredible, tight layouts and his wonderful caricatures, it makes me steam with jealousy and ambition. Just look at them! He even drew my boyfriend in this comic. Don’t you think he got Rasmus down pretty good? ^_^
Anyway, he inspired me to try out some new stuff with my inking and shading. What do you think?

I completely forgot about the baby! Well, this one anyway.
-facepalm-

I knew about you and Anders Loves Maria only 2 days ago. And I read it all yesterday. I ‘ve never read webcomics before. So this page was first which I waited. It’s so… excited! to wait a new one. I like this story and how you draw it. Thank you.

I like your style so much better than any other I have seen so far!
June 27th, 2009 at 11:15 am
The new inking looks great, especially in the top two panels! I can’t wait to see what this does to the comic stylistically.
June 27th, 2009 at 11:37 am
Wow.
June 27th, 2009 at 12:22 pm
It’s so excited.

The shading in the last panel is fantastic, and the new inks are very fluid… and ofcourse, love the comic.

Which one in the other comic is your boyfriend? and this comic was very cute! I like the fruit analogy
June 27th, 2009 at 1:50 pm
@Holly The angry one! ^_^

I’ve been reading Anders Loves Maria for the past few months, and figured I’d pop in to say, “I LOVE IT”. I’m so sad that I’ll be gone for a week or two with no internet to check updates.
I love the look and little shrug in the third panel, so cute!

Heh, this made me smile — the fruit and vegetable analogy thing gets really silly:
http://www.babycenter.com/slideshow-baby-size
I know from grocery checkers that most people have never seen many of these things, e.g., a kumquat or a spaghetti squash. And anyone who’s grown these vegetables knows there’s a huge size variation in the real world. (And is it a regular lime? Or a key lime? Etc.)
Our vegetable this week (38 weeks) is a leek. A leek! i can’t think of a vegetable that is less useful for getting an idea of how large a baby is at 38 weeks. And talk about size variation!
Next week is the more appropriate watermelon, but no vegetable comparison can grasp how wiggly she is…
June 27th, 2009 at 6:13 pm
@Salguod- but is it a regular watermelon, or a PERSONAL watermelon?
June 27th, 2009 at 11:51 pm
they are HAVING that baby! having it, not aborting! jeeze, i hope there are happy faces at the end of both of Marias pregnancies rather than sadness
June 28th, 2009 at 12:13 am
The shading is awesome Rene! I really like it!!!! <3

Shading looks good – as always. Inks are very crisp. For the record, your friend does good work, but I don’t LOVE LOVE LOVE his work. I do love yours.

Hey, I’ve been reading A<3M for a while now, and i have to say these latest pages look great. i think the inking worked out really well.
Thanks a lot for a great comic, and keep up the good work

@theshortcake
well I doubt they will continue having the baby, because if they were where the hell is it now?
the question is just whether she’ll abort to go to Konstfack or whether she miscarries
Right now I am leaning towards the latter because she rejected abortion on principle.
June 28th, 2009 at 3:24 pm
*Really* enjoyed your friend’s artwork. Is there any chance that (s)he starts to do that in English?
Cheers!

Oh this post is so super-cute! I love it. You really captured human interaction here- the silliness, the affection (sometimes disguised as obnoxiousness). I found it such a sweet and touching vignette
June 28th, 2009 at 7:26 pm
Is Bjorn going to tell Maria about Konstfack or not??
June 29th, 2009 at 2:21 am
Awe, I love Maria in the last panel. So cute (:

Been reading your comic for a while now, found it via Questionable Content. You’re work is amazing and so is your writing. So many of these (and ive been through all the archives) manage to punch me right in the gut with the reality of how life can be so utterly f*cked and yet have just as many beautiful moments. I;m loving these latest pages, the style is amazing. Keep it up. As a reader in New Jersey, USA I am a huge fan!!!

They say that the only true compliment any artist can ever give about another artist in their field is,
“I wish I had done that.”
June 29th, 2009 at 7:47 am
I really really like it!

I’ve read the Vimmelgrind books by Mats Källblad, and his art is indeed lovely.

Wow, I really love this comic. The characters have a lot of heart. This comic reminds me of Persepolis because of the pacing and the art style, also the characters are real and believable (though, Persepolis is based off a true story haha). Still, they are both very sweet stories.
