#247 – Nature sure is beautiful
Wednesday, June 17th, 2009So no one is confused, we are in yet another flashback. I’m sure some will be confused anyway. I have a tendency to confuse people sometimes.

Always fun when THAT happens…
June 18th, 2009 at 5:26 am
Oh Johan! I thought that he was making that incident up.
June 18th, 2009 at 5:28 am
I think if I ever bought an original A?M page, it’d be this one.
June 18th, 2009 at 5:41 am
I guess I have to.
Yo dawg! I heard you like flashbacks. So I put a flashback in yo flashback so you can confuse the reader while you confuse the reader.
June 18th, 2009 at 5:55 am
This sideplot seems ridiculous.
June 18th, 2009 at 6:05 am
You’ve never shit your pants while trying to let a quiet one slip?
You sir – have never eaten indian food.
This is probably the definition of love – washing out someone’s shitty underpants.
June 18th, 2009 at 6:08 am
hehe.. I love shart humor! and the prrtt sound effect is great!!!
June 18th, 2009 at 6:43 am
Maybe if you did the flashbacks in a different color, like sepia or b/w? Don’t stop time jumping though, I enjoy it throughly!
June 18th, 2009 at 7:42 am
Johan’s a prophet. A prophet, I tell you!
June 18th, 2009 at 7:49 am
It’s clear Rene
Johan is a sweet boy.
June 18th, 2009 at 8:20 am
i feel like this will end with Johan telling the entire school or something.
June 18th, 2009 at 8:56 am
oh…dear.
June 18th, 2009 at 10:09 am
How awkward. I can’t believe she’s consciously letting her…erm…(boyfriend?) Johan clean her shitty pants. I don’t even think married couples do that for each other.
Also…a stick is probably not going to do the trick.
June 18th, 2009 at 10:44 am
Love makes blind. aw Johan! Asshole in the previous panel and now cleaning his gfs pants.
June 18th, 2009 at 11:08 am
Rene always keeps the characters fleshed out as complete, complex human beings. We see and learn to know every side of their personalities, moreso than we do most people we know in real life.
This definitely makes sure that we don’t think of Johan as just an “asshole.” Not that I personally have ever seen him as such.
It’s hard to describe the personalities of these characters in words (a sign of success). I’m not sure if I’d actually get along with Johan in real life, but I respect him immensely.
June 18th, 2009 at 11:23 am
I thought Johan was just being juvenile and mean, making up something mean to say about her… the fact that it actually happened makes him a total bastard for drawing that picture.
June 18th, 2009 at 12:01 pm
he’s still so naive. in the previous slide, he’s being really mean about it!
June 18th, 2009 at 12:10 pm
@ Kileycakes
I totally know my girlfriend would do that for me, and we’re not even married yet!
I pretty much hated Johan until this strip. I didn’t know he had the ability to be that sweet.
June 18th, 2009 at 12:42 pm
No, this is a flashback, and he’s making fun of her for the incident in the previous comic.
June 18th, 2009 at 1:49 pm
Flashback in a flashback sure is a bit confusing
June 18th, 2009 at 1:57 pm
Erm…. just to be sure: You are aware that this most probably is a flashback from the last page? It happened before the note was passed and explains it.
June 18th, 2009 at 2:36 pm
I think the flashbacks are crystal clear. Come on, guys, the characters’ heads get (even) bigger when they’re kids!
Anyways, I love the mixture of childishness and tenderness brought out by this rather…. special situation. Effective portrayal of young love! And people grossed out by this have seemingly never taken care of a drunken (Swedish) friend, partner, or had a dog or a kid
June 18th, 2009 at 3:05 pm
hahaha
WHAT?
No seriously, I might do that for my GF…. but I’m sure she would run to the woods instead.
June 18th, 2009 at 4:07 pm
Obviously it’s a flashback to before the note.
That being said…uh…this is a little weird. Unless Tina’s shitty pants are going to one day figure into some huge key plot point later on, this seems a little…too much, you know? It would have been better if the “I don’t want to be with someone who shits their pants” thing was just an immature attempt at hurting her as opposed to a reference to this. It’s also kinda bizarre; in a relationship or not, I cannot imagine anyone around their age letting the other clean their soiled underpants for them.
It’s gross and weird. Really.
June 18th, 2009 at 4:29 pm
Who’s to say what a young man in love will or won’t do, there are a lot of things crazier than cleaning shitty underpants that boys have done for a girl they liked.
June 18th, 2009 at 4:55 pm
@Ally: I was weird and occasionally gross when I was a kid. I actually remember pooping my pants one winter when hanging outside with my neighborhood sweetheart. That was embarrassing. I didn’t let her clean my underwear, but since then I’ve known plenty of people where that kind of thing would be completely permissible.
All in all, I think this is capturing a great story of very awkward youths who tried love and grew up into very awkward adults (who still occasionally try love).
June 18th, 2009 at 6:07 pm
This stip is very valid in the plotline, and people who don’t see that need to look a little closer. Tina placed her trust in Johan in a very vulnerable and embarrassing moment, and Johan was more than supportive of her in that moment. After being hurt by Tina’s response to the note in the previous strip, he gets angry and brings up that embarrassing time to insult her. These flashback strips have been a lot about trust and what happens when its betrayed.
June 18th, 2009 at 7:32 pm
I used to do this all the time as a kid when on vacation. Something about changing my everyday routine just led me to poop my pants like crazy.
Supposedly this isn’t all that uncommon. Makes me feel a bit better in retrospect, but fuck if I’d tell anyone without the protective barrier of an anonymous post shielding me.
June 18th, 2009 at 8:49 pm
This sort of confirms my suspicion from the last … entirety of this story.Johan is basically a koala. Soft and sweet until you piss it off and then it mauls your face/house.
I <3 Johan.
June 19th, 2009 at 3:34 am
oh come on! really? You’re gonna let him clean your shit-pants Tina? damn woman. I accidently peed myself on a date once so i took off my drawers and stuffed them in my purse after heavily rinsing them. I’d never take them off and hand them to the boy confused! you’re just asking for some gossips, sister
June 19th, 2009 at 10:48 am
It’s not that I think it’s impossible for one person to help another person out like this. Like if you had to wipe your grandfather’s rear for him because you love him and he can’t. There’s just no motivation for why HE would do it, when SHE is perfectly capable of it. What person would let someone else do that for them? They’re both weird, because it’s a pretty unnecessary gesture.
And you can’t even feel like he’s a good guy for doing, because you just saw him making her feel awful for the incident.
Sorry, I just think it’s a misstep.
June 22nd, 2009 at 4:28 am
Hmhmhm. I’ve actually always like Johan (even though he can be a callous asshole.) but this makes him seem really sweet and willing for someone he likes. I think he’s hashing this back out at her because she’s rejecting him after they were ohsoclose, not because he’s a bastard.
June 22nd, 2009 at 10:00 pm
So does this take place before or after she gets un-knocked up? Is this still Earth-Prime?
If “Pulp Fiction” has taught us anything, it’s that out-of-sequence storytelling sometimes works, sometimes… scrubscrubscrub.
June 23rd, 2009 at 5:21 am
The comic does not necessarily portray the extent of the mishap. Myself, I’m single and am subject to my own laundry (and care not to look most times as I toss the soiled laundries into the washer), I’m dear friends to many married soles, several with children. The one friend (http://www.mommywantsvodka.com/) has a rather eloquent, if not uncouth term for it: poo crayons: that is to say, you wipe and wipe and wipe, but no matter how hard you wipe, there’s still something there. Almost as if you could write on a wall.
That being said, I would chalk unresolvables on a bit of a different level that blatantly shatting one’s self.
Rene, however, as always, cheers on a wonderful comic.

Jeeze, just chuck em in the bushes and wipe your ass with some leaves.
August 19th, 2009 at 7:46 am
i wasnt very confused because i’ve been reading the archives for the past day or so, but your comic is very confusing. at times some of the charachters are hard to tell apart, and your flashbacks, while nice and important to the plot, do come out of the blue in a non-sequitor style, and you have flashback so often that we seem to just jump around on the timeline, rather than progressing linearly.
but you stilll have a great comic, even if it is confusing and ever so slightly pornographic
