#170 - I’m Not Waiting.

Friday, June 27th, 2008

What this comic lacks in cobblestone, building and plant detail, it makes up for in romance!

I would write more but I am exhausted.

Wow, Ireally love the shadow work in today’s strip. It seems so far ahead from that first strip when Anders asked Maria if she wanted a baby ^^

    PS

For the Americans who don’t know. When Maria says 15, it means 3:00pm.

  2. Michael Says:

    A fantastic sincere comic. Aces!

  3. Chrissy Says:

It is an ongoing yet low-priority goal of mine to make more of my friends use both the metric system and express the time in full 24-hour days. Despite both making complete and total sense (in science and in europe), I already know this will never succeed.

  4. KACC28 Says:

aww look at Ander’s smile! He so wants to get back with her!! Cuteness!!!

  5. Megtastic Says:

Panels 4-7 just make me go ‘Awwww’ :)

    I’ve been such a sap lately. :)

  6. Eva Says:

    aaaw.

That’s why hugging Exes is a bad idea. ;D

  7. Kat Says:

I don’t think I’ve ever squealed that loudly reading a webcomic. Maybe because that experience happened to me recently, minus the pregnancy. …what Eva said is very true.

  8. Qow Says:

I found this comic today when looking through the news of Dr. McNinja, dated June 3rd. I read the entire thing from beginning to now, and I must say I love it. This is a beautiful webcomic. Thank you for your wonderful addition to my list of websites to check every so often.

    That is all.

  9. Miss Maria Says:

I hope it works out. Its not like anything is stopping them. Neighter of them are seriously dating other people.

  10. er Says:

Yes… so romantic, kissing the mouth that ate out Tina and then called YOU selfish. Mmm. Yummy.

  11. joe glow Says:

    oh my GOD so good.

  12. Marissa Says:

    Don’t give in Maria!

  13. Kate Says:

Those last few panels are more true to life than just about anything I’ve ever read. XD

  14. kaiki Says:

I don’t know if they will get back together or not. But I predict, the two of them getting it on will be what induces the labor of the child. ^_-

  15. Indigno Says:

Oh, Anders. You sly, Swedish motherfucker, you.

  16. margie Says:

    Daaaaw.
    Get married, already!

  17. Mista J Says:

We Americans should start saying 15, too.

    Good work again, Rene.

  18. gabbilicious Says:

    xabcjadbc;kadc
thats what my excitment looks like.

  19. Ben Says:

Haha. I am constantly amazed at how tiny Maria is.

  20. Hannah Says:

Man, my summer hasn’t been so pleasant, thus far-I write to you from my parent’s pantry, which is full of bugs-but dangit, this just made it so freaking great.
Thank you for writing this comic.

  21. Eric Merrill Says:

    YAAAAAAAAY!

Yeah, but the same thing happened last time I sat on a couch with an ex…but she wasn’t preggies…and we both said ‘fuck.’

  22. DubDub Says:

    Ha! Haha hahaa!

    That is my OHMYGODTHEYISMAKINGTEHKISSES laugh.

More. More more more. Don’t resist, Maria! You know you want Anders in your pants!

  23. Fiona Says:

Indigno couldn’t have put it better.
    Anders is one crafty motherfucker.
but oh, do i LOVES it.
    :D

  24. Jonathan Bruder Says:

Damn. I feel like I’ve been caught at the door by an old friend…. while I’m in my bathrobe. It’s awesome! But I was totally unprepared.

  25. Haunt Says:

Seems like she’s given up, eh? ;) That sounds like a “I was trying to avoid this!” fuck to me!

  26. Dain Says:

Wohoo theire kissing! I hope they come together again! Please Rene, let them be a happy family :)

  27. Andy Says:

    WOOOOO!!!!!!!

  28. Cuddi Says:

    (big smiles) Yay =D

  29. charchum Says:

    yay!

  30. Solo Jones Says:

    Called it.

    Called it so hard.

Anders may be an asshole, but he’s an asshole with dreamy, soulful, eyes.

    Love Maria in panel 3.

  31. Michaela Says:

WHY do I still like Anders after all he’s put Maria through? (I actually went to bed upset and feeling like a good cry after reading the strips when he and Tina first hooked up!) Could be because he kind of reminds me of my boyfriend - minus the whole infidelity thing. ;)

Rene, you have me on the edge of my seat. Sometimes I feel like not checking the site for a week just so I’d have more material to go through - but I definitely can’t hold out that long.

  32. Chris Berlett Says:

this hurts to watch, but it is so awesome nonetheless. i don’t know what to hope for; for anders to stick with his “i don’t want to have a baby with you” and maria’s “…i still don’t want to get back together with you!” or having them make the babies and make it work well.

IT’S SO DIFFICULT TO READ! only not at all.

  33. gord allott Says:

    \o/ cobblestones

  34. Amber Says:

Those of us Americans who live near military institutions are VERY familiar with the 24hour system. :) It’s the silliest thing. My country is all “NO, DON’T DO ANYTHING THAT WILL MAKE SENSE, THEN THEY WILL KNOW WE WERE WRONG FOR SO LONG”…*sigh*

  35. Rene Engström Says:

I personally think the English variant of telling time with “o’clock” to be quite charming.

  36. Casey Says:

    Anders just can’t help himself…

    *le sigh*

  37. Alex F Says:

OHHHHHH THE TAAAANGLED WEBBBZ WE WEEEEAVE

  38. fnord Says:

Damn Ms. Engström, you’re a damn fine observer of people: the male-to-female head kiss… Performed before one of the two persons involved gathers the courage to commence actual kissing, it only works if there is sufficient difference in height between the participants. It’s sneaky charm lies in the fact that - in theory - it could be interpreted as a purely platonic expression of fondness for the other, while in reality it rarely ever is.

  39. Withing Says:

I dunno, this whole ‘numbers’ thing is coldly useful and all, but I think we’d be better going back to keeping track of Matins, Lauds, Prime, Terce, Sext, Angelus, Vespers and Compline. Thats plenty of divisions for a day. 24 is just too many.

Maybe you could do a version of the title header with a bunch of cobblestones in it, since people really seem to like ‘em. This whole ‘romance’ thing is great, but we mustn’t neglect architecture! heh

  40. grace Says:

ha, i so loved the way he held her with those eyes and that hand on the back of her head on the first panel in the last row. that said, i still think anders is a jerk. ):

  41. charchum Says:

i wonder if he’ll get a hair cut..

  42. BG Says:

Thanks for putting a lot of effort into your work, Rene. I really appreciate you putting the comic updates as a priority despite personal life struggles/things!

  43. Seth Says:

Panel 4-7 are very cute. I see that most of you people making comments are hoping for Anders and Maria to get back together. Where would all the juicy drama go if it was that easy? Happy endings are great, but what we all want is drama to the end.;) Hopefully Anders past time with Tina in Norrland will resurface to haunt him and Maria.

  44. Jonboy Says:

And the woman ends up scurrying back to the scumbag.. Wow! Very realistic as it happens.

  45. Mike Says:

Seth, while I agree that wanting drama to end prematurely is basically asking for a lot of the interest of the story to end prematurely, I think there can be plenty of drama for a long time even if Anders and Maria get back together; also, romantic comedies where the couple gets back together only at the very end can be kind of unsatisfying a lot of the time (especially since in a lot of cases the final reunion isn’t necessarily “earned” by the characters in any real way). I’m not saying that getting back together at the end is always bad, but it is a fairly stock way to go and I have been holding out for something a bit more surprising than that. Also, melodrama and drama aren’t the same thing. Ultimately, I want to see an engaging, honest, witty story, and I think there are lots of ways to go from where Anders and Maria are currently that would satisfy that desire. In any event, it seems like there are a number of pretty obvious story beats that are just on the horizon, so I don’t expect drama to end all that soon. But we’ll see. :)

  46. Mike Says:

One additional comment: I’m not saying that I think ALM’s genre is some kind of pure romantic comedy; I was just talking about one genre where the limits of where the drama can go are often way too circumscribed.

  47. Paav Says:

I am always suprised when everyone rushes to condemn Anders and deplore any contact that Maria has with him. There is no way to defend Anders, he is an asshole and a particularly selfish one at that. However, Maria can be something of a heinous little bitch as well.

Her family continuously trashes Anders. She doesn’t defend him from them just caastigates him for trying to interact on the same level. Tries to get him fired from his job. Then goes to the job and acts like a smarmy, duplicitous bitch, while her brother is spray painting Tina’s house. Her actions were every bit as indefensible as Anders’ were.

The difference is that Maria was acting with a callous disregard for Anders’ feelings, Anders was purposefully malicious in his reaction (though his being drunk may have been why he went so far). You can parse which one is worse but both caused the other person to end the relationship in their own mind. Anders decided to break up with Maria when he saw the spray paint. Maria decided to leave when she saw Anders with Tina.

It’s the balance and humanity that Rene captures that intrigue me about this story. Each one has hurt the other very badly and neither could be blamed if they never wanted a relationship. But it does seem like there are true feelings between the two of them. They both backed away from other willing partners. I am interested to see whether they can mature enough to be together or be apart; or if they will continue their current behavior.

  48. berga Says:

awesomeness, for better or worse this will create some delicious havoc.

also, Not related to time, but i still sometimes confuse myself reading dates on american pages, eg month/day/year. especially when it is past the 12th of that month.

  49. Aurie Says:

I love the expressiveness of the hands. The way they hold their hands really says a lot about how they’re feeling.

  50. Reuben Says:

For those of you wanting drama, wait until Johan releases the cell phone video that he made.

  51. Mari Says:

“FUCK!” hahaha! nice mood killer Maria

  52. SarahKat Says:

I just read your entire archives in one sitting: this comic is a beautiful piece of art and prose! Especially given the typical American standards of, er…not showing weenies and even mildly deviant sex…the confidence and depth of your work is a refreshing change. I love it!

  53. july Says:

For some reason I don’t hate Anders for being a dickface. Maybe it’s because he treated the other girl like shit and she ended up being sort of deserving of being treated like shit. If he’d actually had some sort of real relationship with the other woman, I’d say off with his head, but somehow it feels like there was some weird kind of justice in it.

He still sucks but I think he should be with Maria anyway.
Which is weird because personally, I’d never get back with someone that cheated on me. =/ They’d be GONE FOREVER.

  54. Namagem Says:

I swear, before the years out, I’ll learn 24hr fluently.

  55. Rachel Says:

It’s interesting. A very good comic. I feel sorry for the pair of them but at the same time I’m happy they might get back together. You can tell that they love each other and I’m sure Maria would be calling for Anders when she is giving birth if he wasn’t there. I hope he doesn’t make the same mistakes that he did in the past and I hope Maria won’t be so hothead over the small things. But then again, that’s what you learn to love about these guys. :)
