  1. John Says:

Anders seems to have problems accepting his new mum.

  2. Rayjay Says:

    Is… is Anna *Smiling*?!

  3. Puhakka Says:

never commented before, but reading this is kind of the highlight of my day! Sättet du får alla att älska dina karaktärer med alla deras fel och brister.. de är så mänskliga. Jättebra serie!

  4. Phenix Says:

Well, if you’re going to be technical, Anna’s going to be a STEP grand-ma. Though I suspect having my now lesbian ex-girlfriend be the step grandmother of the child of the girlfriend who’s the foster sister of the woman I cheated on her with would be a rather odd experience and I’d probably have a hard time accepting it either.

  5. Phenix Says:

Oh and I’m kinda digging the new look. I’ve always like the art style, but the hand-drawn is a bit more…personal.

  6. Cherie Says:

    I LOVE ANNA

  7. El Hombre Malo Says:

    Anna is cool

  8. Hec Says:

Yiou know…with all the different styles used to draw this comic, I have yet to see one Miss.

  9. Dave Says:

    It’s pretty :-O
Is it a lot more work to hand paint them?

  10. Alytia Says:

It’s nice, but I like the computer style more. I think I may be the only one though. :P

Love the comic, keep it up!

  11. Hec Says:

It looks like it to me.

  12. Alex F. Says:

anna appears to drive a space-bubble futurecar.

  13. christina Says:

He forgot the bit about cheating on her with her former foster sister. Way worse, Anders.

  14. manuel Says:

excelente artwork, keep on the good work and the experimentation

  15. Tinuviel Says:

I completely adore the colour-work of the hand-painted comics, but I prefer the computer-drawn line-work.

Can I be really fussy and ask if there’s a way to retain the beautiful clear flow of the outlines, while incorporating the looseness of the water-colours?

Maybe, I don’t know, draw the strip on the computer, then print it out and paint on it?

Either way, I love the way Anders can just break down and be truly honest with Anna. Possibly because he knows there’s no way he’ll get to sleep with her again!

  16. Joy Says:

It feels like a timewarp. I guess I hadn’t even thought about whether Ander’s family was clued into what happened with Maria. I assumed that they were in the loop– apparently not.

I really like the hand painted panels. It is nice to see some diversity.

  17. shmoose Says:

    I kind of like the computer drawn better. ^^;
BUT I STILL LOVE YOUR COMIC!
    *Squeal*

  18. sarahashley Says:

it’s so nice to see glimpses of Stockholm again!

  19. JAPONfan Says:

hmmm Anders should say “I fucked up Tina”

  20. Antsan Says:

Her reaction is pure gold. I think it’s the best that could happen to Anders.

  21. tekende Says:

How do you get these to scan so nicely? I have never been able to scan a watercolor so that it looks good onscreen.

  22. Rene Engström Says:

tekende: Funny I think these scans look like crap. The lighter blues are barely visible. :( I’m testing myself forward though so hopefully soon I will get the hang of scanning and other techniques.

  23. tomi / jzmz Says:

I like how there was a change of presentation and at the same time there was a change in location/plot. I liked the computer look, but I think this is more, like someone said, personal and maybe a bit more emotional too. But whatever you do with the art style, don’t stop experimenting! That’s one of the strong points of A

  24. Opus the Poet Says:

I liked the computer drawn stuff better, it was more clear, and easier to understand. The watercolors are better as art, and would work as “re-interpretation” of AThe Beautiful Anders Loves Maria, the artist works in other media Either way the strip is good.

    Opus

  25. Opus the Poet Says:

OK that bit of HTML didn’t work so well…

  26. Christine Says:

I actually like the colors on this a lot more than the computer drawn ones, but I agree with whoever said it earlier, I like the bold lines of the computer drawn comics. I can’t visualize very well what they would look like together, but I’m just bad a visualizing things like that. :)

  27. Tinuviel Says:

Was me! I did say it!
    :p

  28. bhc Says:

Didn’t Anna see Maria when she was showing at the hospital? I guess that explains why she was so unpleasant to a pregnant woman.

  29. Dave Says:

err.. i’m not sure.. but when your scanning, normally a scanner lid has a big shiny reflective surface, maybe if you put something thick and mat over the back of the picture it won’t be lightened so much. But don’t stick a big heavy book on top of the scanner.. cus that can break them :-)

  30. Caroline Says:

Rene the colour tone looks good on my screen- but then i always have it slightly darker because i’m moody :D

Its funny because they are about the same age and even look the same age, but its like she looks like his mum already through the ‘pouty naughty boy’ and ‘mum who puts up with alot’ mannerisms. Great attention to detail shown in an amazingly simple way :)

  31. Rene Engström Says:

    Thanks Dave!

I’ll give that a try for tomorrow! :)

  32. Chuck Says:

Rene, I think lesbians can marry over there, can they?

    She said “I’m gonna be a grandma”…. D:

  33. Rene Engström Says:

Chuck: It will be legal very soon. Almost all major parties in Sweden are united in the decision (save the Christian Democrats). Same sex marraige even has the blessings of the Church Of Sweden. It’s just a formality at this point, and the law is expected to be passed in early 2008. Today Civil Unions are legal and offer all the same benefits as marraige.

  34. the strange one Says:

it may be odd, but i think the computer-drawn strips are really unique (style-wise), whereas the hand-drawn ones look like stuff i’ve seen before. i really love the colouring, though, it’s very pretty. but they look more like the illustrations in a book, or something. the computer-drawn ones stand for themselves (well, obviously).

whatever, it’ll remain one of my favourite webcomics either way!

  35. Joey P Says:

I 100% have a crush on your new drawin’ style

  36. charchum Says:

i agree with joey p. this is really nice rene! i initially wanted to comment on how panel one is more beautiful than the rest.. however i got over it.. and still think it’s much nicer than the computer work!

  37. Ashley Kromarek Says:

    I like Anna.

  38. Lach Says:

yah from artist’s perspective, quite pretty, but not practical for web comic, text and character outlines/expressions are not as clear - ie i prefer the digital method

  39. Rachel Says:

i like both methods, but i think i would like the hand drawn method more if you could figure out a way to make those colors more intense

    either way, PRETTY AWESOME

  40. Sam Says:

I’m certain that you’ve heard enough comments on the art style, but I have to say that I also preferred the computer style. While the water colour is nice, I prefer the consistency of colour from the computer.

On another note, I really love Anna’s mannerisms. They’re so adorable.

  41. Hec Says:

Hey, is it me or dod Anna gain a little weight?

  42. Afternoon Says:

I decided to go through every link on the new PfSC link page, and I’m so fucking glad I did. Also, dig the hand drawn style. It looks like a cross between a child’s drawing and a New Yorker comic.

  43. Vic Says:

I feel bad for writing as a first-timer with criticism, because I really love the comic in general. I do find the hand-drawn to be less personal and less emotional. Some of that is polish type stuff that will come with time (although I’m making a big leap assumption in thinking that you don’t draw like this for yourself all the time). For example, I think the visual language for emotions that comes through with the eyes has been lost in the transition, but I’m sure will be found again or reworked as time goes on. In general I find the computer style more polished and clearer in its emotional impact.

There are a couple of things I already like about the new style, like the slightly off-kilter background in panel 1 and the look of the trees in the first panel yesterday. I absolutely support an artist trying something new, stretching their skills in different ways, etc., so on that level I have no criticism at all. It’s still a great comic.

  44. Rene Engström Says:

Hey guys! Don’t feel for a nanosecond guilty about giving me criticism. I welcome it. I am sticking with the handpainted for the time-being though. I have, like the above poster stated, a few kinks to work out until it really starts to feel like the ALM universe. I’m testing this stuff live people, I always have since the strip’s beginning. It’s fun!

  45. Katrina Says:

    Hi Rene,

I’ve never posted here before, but I thought I’d give you some feedback on the hand-drawn experiment. I think I like the art (not 100% decided) but I think I’d like it better if you used the same text that you used to.

  46. BG Says:

Regarding the art: In my opinion there was some beautiful Scandinavian jazz/blues feeling over the computer drawn panels, I got a solid vibe of Monica Zetterlund’s singing and Jan Johanson’s piano play. This feel is not there in the hand-drawn ones, they lack some of the clean, empty “air”. The old style truly hit a unique accord that way, that I feel was very fitting for a story set in Sweden. (I could have written an essay about Kuktraesk from just the few landscape panels) This typically Swedish tone is not as obvious in the new style. Now, the hand-drawn style might be better suited for where the story is heading, Just my 0 pence worth of thoughts.

  47. Taeshi Says:

This is gonna sound like a total fangirl, but I am in love with the traditional style right now. At this moment they just feel like they’re in a sleepy, bright morning.. and I don’t know why people keep thinking this feels less personal. I feel using watercolours and pencils way more personal that poking the “bucket” button on the computer to colour something. Then again I’ve always loved traditional work.

I do have to say, though.. that if you aren’t really aiming for the “sleepy bright morning” right now, then I guess that would be a problem. It’s fitting right now, but I guess not in the future. But hey, all to experiment! Keep it up!

  48. Taeshi Says:

Also I just noticed.. Anna doesn’t seem to have a rearview mirror in her car.

LOOK OUT YOU’RE GONNA CRASH aaaah

  49. Aric Says:

The new artwork is terrific. Really love it. Keep it up!
