I’m looking forward to more back story on why Tina is so hated. Seems to me that while Maria thinks Tina “has it all” she’s really just adrift and has made some pretty horrid choices where Anders is concerned. He’s a tool, she knows he’s a tool, and it appears she’s going to finally stop taking it up the bork bork and give a little back. So far, she’s the only person in this story I *don’t* think of as a complete jerk.
Right to a private conversation aside, Anders is a jerk who deserves what’s coming to him.

Well, as far as it goes, I sympathized with Anders for the way Maria and her family were treating him and the stress he must have been under with the whole Lars thing, and I liked him and Tina together.
But he’s demonstrated again and again that when he’s the dominant force in a relationship, he acts like a complete shit, and knows it. He’s acknowledged that his actions were going to be harmful to Tina, and while it’s certainly her responsibility to pull herself out of the situation, he’s got an understanding of what her personality is like, and hasn’t done anything to make it any easier for her.

oh, so Tina sleeps with Anders despite the fact that Maria is pregnant with his child, and then gets mad at him when he doesn’t want to stay with her? I can understand being upset because of taking the conversation out of context, but if she’s doing what I think she’s doing, then she’s just being stupid. I don’t know what else she could possibly expect out of him other than a “thanks for the bork, adios”.

Anders is acting very bipolar lately. One second he is laughing about Tina and the next he is all sympathetic.

Well, Anders was not always a complete shit to Maria earlier in the comic - far from it, despite their problems. “Lack of backstory” is actually I think one of the things that led to Anders and Maria’s relationship getting to its current horrible place. Maria seems to have been a rather closed off person, not telling Anders a ton of stuff about herself, and Anders seems (not just with Maria, but for example with his mother and his ex) to have almost willfully avoided learning (or seeing) important things about those to whom he was closest. Anders and Maria just didn’t talk things through a lot (at least that we saw on panel), and that led directly to the current mess; I can imagine, for example, a conversation between Anders and Maria that would have probably avoided the Tina meltdown altogether, and that would have been at least a start on the underlying issues Anders and Maria have to work through. But that conversation would have required Anders and Maria to talk through - for real, not just briefly as they did - why Tina made Maria feel so horrible and whether Maria really had as little regard for Anders as he was feeling she and her family did at the time. So more backstory in general is something both Anders and Maria need to learn in order to figure out where they are going individually and together.
However, it’s been basically an entire season in the real world since the two of them have really interacted in the present in any sustained and even slightly positive way (besides a couple of too-brief phone calls), so I’m still hoping that at least in the immediate future some of the essential backstory will come out through interactions between them rather than entirely between them and secondary characters like Tina and Bjorn.

I stand by the fact that Anders is not a total dick. He made it clear to Tina that they wouldnt work out, and she has been pretty clingy.
Fact of the matter is she knew this would happen but kept telling herself otherwise.
But, what Anders said was pretty low. But deep down I firmly think he likes her if only in a friendly way.

@Jface: What’s not to understand? Anders just revealed that he knows what the rest of us have the whole time: He’s being a complete shitheel to Tina. And now he has the balls to joke about it. Add to that the vibe from this strip - that Anders knows all this, but since Tina’s not complaining then it must not bother her. Not to mention it looks like he’s going to keep on keeping on with this until either he reconciles with Maria or Tina finally kicks him to the curb.
People were pissed before when we thought Anders was just a clueless ass. Now that we know he’s aware of his transgressions, we’re pissed double.
It’s a credit to Ms. Engstrom that she can create such characters that we can get this pissed at tham, yet still keep coming back (and root for them to snap the fuck out of it.).

libbydibby, thanks for trying to stick up for those of us with bipolar disorder, but the original comment was perfectly valid. Bipolar is a family of disorders, and covers a lot of ground.
I’m not suggesting that Anders actually IS bipolar, but the mood swings between aggression and sympathy, the inappropriate and hurtful sense of humour, and the hypersexual behaviour could all be signs of a hypomanic episode.

Anders is a dick, because he cheated on his pregnant girlfriend, but not because of this conversation. There have been many signs that Anders still has feelings for Maria (and at least he hasn’t asked her to come back, that would be sad) and the call from her that was friendly and talked about his child likely put what he had with Tina in perspective.
Anders is talking with his best friend, and Im all sure we’ve talked bad about people in relationships, even about people we did like, He’s just saying that shes not coming with him because its not much of a relationshop. He’s just a pussy, as Lena said, because he can’t break it off because Tina is nice, to a very sad point. He’s not having this conversation in front of her sititng in the room, shes hiding at the door, which is unfortunate, because hes just being honest with his friend.
Btw Johan and her are going to screw, because Anders said “the only other person to fuck is the town drunk, and he has a right sexy hunchback” Well there is Johan, who does not have a hunchback. But i were Anders i would be “Meh, well that fixed that problem”

Ehh, re: the Johan/Maria thing–I kinda doubt it. I don’t really see what screwing her former foster brother would really accomplish. This little scenario seems like it’s going to be the straw that breaks the camel’s back. Seems to me that this is going to be where Tina realizes the mistake she’s made and finally takes some steps to deal with Anders. I think Tina has the idea now that her sleeping with someone else isn’t going to hurt Anders, if that’s her agenda. Letting Johan finish beating the shit out of him most definitely will.

@Jface: I’m unsure if you understand what cognitive dissonance really is, but in any case, I don’t think the example you use is really a good example of it. I also don’t see why it matters whether Anders said these things behind Tina’s back or to her face. Either way, he’s said them. If she hadn’t heard, everyone would still be all “OMG DICKFACE” because he HAS done some pretty fucked up things.
