#134 - Willing To Please

Thursday, April 3rd, 2008

Forgot to mention in the dialogue. Anders is no longer talking with Maria, he is now on the phone with his best friend Lena. Sometimes conversations between you and your closest friend are best left between the two of you.

Not much to say about this strip so there won’t be a video on it. But here is a really funny video and comic that I didn’t do. They both had me in stitches!

  1. Hec Says:

    DUDE >=(

  2. BG Says:

    man, Anders.. you’re a dick.

  3. irrational_moon Says:

wow. what a turd. I can see both Maria and Tina laying the smack down on Anders.

    still…

    ouch.

  4. karl Says:

    Holy God. Make it stop!

  5. Freezer Says:

And here I was at least willing to give Anders the benefit of the doubt that he didn’t realize what a dick he was being.

    So much for that…

  6. Hec Says:

Please tell me Tina has an older Brother that she can get in touch with. I Know he is exited about a possibly re-connection with Mari, (Maybe not romantically at the moment but not definitely better than a negative and distant one) but to give an emotional thrashing to the one who have treated you with hospitality, friendship and even her body and spirit uncalled for. Burn in hell Anders!

  7. SuperGraffiti Says:

Dang, Anders is a dickbag. Just a big ol’ bag of dicks.

  8. Mandiiv Says:

    OH SNAP

… I love how her usually perky nose seems to droop in the last panel!

  9. jen Says:

i hate anders so much right now.

  10. Hannah Says:

Probably the best for her to hear-but really-oh snapple-Dick move.

  11. Duke-Thane Says:

I really really hope that tommorow’s comic will just have tina finally going ape shit on him and kicking him out on his ass…that’d be soooo damn sweet.

  12. Stef Says:

    Nej
    Nej nej nej neeeejjjeeee

  13. Joanna Says:

Ack! So much for my theory that Anders meant well but just kept making bad choices.

I don’t feel sorry for Tina, though. She deserves it. She should have known better than to get involved with Anders in the first place.

  14. Alabaster Crippens Says:

Anything I previously said about Anders not being a total dick is withdrawn. Heartlessness prevails. Essentially totally wrapped up in his own bubble.

    Bastard.

  15. Kat Says:

Ditto @ Duke-Thane! No way she could stand him after this.

  16. James Says:

    Whoa…

I had always thought Anders was a fine guy. Made some bad choices, sure, but generally a good guy at heart. I figured the whole Tina thing was just out of confusion on his part, and that he wasn’t sure what to do about it, or how he felt.

    But now?

Now I think Anders is a complete and utter fucktard.

    Poor Tina!

  17. Dominic White Says:

First lying to Maria over the phone, then admitting openly (and with a smug smirk) that he’s completely using Tina?

Anders needs to get punched again.

  18. Indigno Says:

Up until he made bang bang with Tina Anders was the good guy. I don’t really understand how someone’s characteristics can chage that dramatically in a storyline like that.

  19. Olentzero Says:

Anders is a spoiled rich kid. Pure and simple. It’s not hard to sympathize with him when he get shit on (like Johan and Maria’s stunt) but it’s his responses where the real Anders comes through. Boy’s too damn shallow for his own good.

  20. Kat Says:

Indigno: Anders had a pretty traumatic experience when he put that guy in the hospital and then had to flee the police… maybe his frustration is manifesting itself in assholeness.

Or maybe we just didn’t see this side before.

  21. TLupien Says:

Anders needs to be kicked in the nuts repeatedly. Granted, Tina isn’t the brightest person, but she’s sweet and deserves so much better than that. And here I was thinking that Bjorn was the resident asshole in the strip.

  22. Jesse Says:

I’d be much happier if this was the April Fool’s Day strip.

Blech. What last vestiges of sympathy I had for Anders are now completely gone.

  23. Christine Says:

I think Olentzero has pegged it. Anders grew up rich and privileged, probably had everything he ever wanted with just a snap of the fingers, and being considerate of how your actions affect other people isn’t necessarily often a part of that upbringing.

  24. Jello Says:

    HIT HIM TINA!

  25. kaiki Says:

Wow, I agree with Jesse. I would be happier if this was the April’s Fool’s Day.
It seems that Anders has just entered Shakespearian territory with being completely unsympathetic. If Anders died in tomorrows strip then I would do a little dance because even if Anders gets together with Maria it seems like he would be a poor father indeed. I hope that he redeems himself, if Ms. Engstrom is able to pull that off then she will be one of the finest cartoonists of our time.

  26. Sarah Says:

    …!

Johan can come back to beat the shit out of him now! I hope Anders is sentenced to many many years in prison! Bjorn is also not working out for Maria!

    New pairing: Tina/Maria!

  27. ... Says:

I feel bad for Tina here…That was wrong of Anders. Really, really wrong.

I mean I’ve been sympathetic for him the whole time: Maria’s family was all really mean to him when he was there because he’d stood up for her, he made the mistake of sleeping with Tina and that wasn’t bright, but Maria broke up with him (sad), and now some other guy is with Maria while she’s pregnant with his baby. But God. Poor Tina.

She should yell at him and kick him out so he can get his head on straight and look at his priorities.

  28. Ivey Says:

Wow, no more Tina hatred for anyone else after this. Anders is an ass.

  29. Holly Says:

    Now Tina looks like Moomin!

  30. Rene Engström Says:

There’s a little bit of Tove in everything I do. I love her so hard. :)

  31. Koosh Koosh! Says:

Okay, Anders is a dick. :(

Whyyyyy, Rene, why? He’s my favourite character! You break my heart, man. :[

  32. Rene Engström Says:

Aaw Koosh I’m sorry. I don’t think he’s being particularly dicky, he’s just talking to his best friend in a tone that he normally doesn’t use with anyone else, and unfortunately Tina heard what they were saying.

  33. Kenya Says:

‘Worships the toilet I shit on”? Gah!

I do think it’s funny that he ruined his relationship with Maria by sleeping with another woman in front of her because he didn’t know she was there, and now he’s (hopefully) ruining what he has with Tina the same way. Whoops.

  34. Willias Says:

Anders is an ass, but if he wasn’t an ass, he wouldn’t have cheated on Maria in the first place.

Seriously though, it’s pretty obvious he’s done with Tina, and if she doesn’t kick him out now, she’s extremely stupid.

The comments about no one else screwing her were extremely rude and likely untrue, but he was dead on with everything else. She’s let him walk all over her.

  35. Sofia Falkenhem Says:

I LOVE Anders now. Because, well, I’ve hated Tina from her first panel. Every bit of her, looks and and insecurity, reminds me of a certain backstabbing bitch from my past (though there was no guys involved for us). Rene, you are doing a really great job portraying your characters in a way that makes us readers feel these things. They are irrational in a very convincing way, I can relate to everything both A and M does.

  36. Mouko Says:

I see… so it’s basically how there’s a difference in the way you talk to your friends, your lover, and your family…?

He talks rather… exceedingly casual with Maria. Just like how some people will cuss when talking to their friends while they’ll censor themselves when talking to their parents.

  37. Rene Engström Says:

Well, Anders is talking to Lena right now, not Maria (sorry I know its unclear in the strip, my mistake), and Lena can be very vulgar as well. So together they swear up a storm. You are right though. Anders is just joking around with his friend, not really thinking about what he’s saying.

  38. charchum Says:

this is a pretty good birthday present! thanks!

  39. mary Says:

do we want someone like this to be with maria, to be a father? even if he doesn’t ‘mean’ it, this still proves those thoughts have occurred to him

  40. Mike Says:

Yeah, this is rough. Anders and Maria are generally the two characters I sympathize with the most in the comic, but Anders’ tone here seems really out of character from the person I’ve been reading up until now - who I still would like to think is basically a very well-intentioned person doing a lot of messed up things because he does not really want to deal with what is in front of his face and because he is in fact in a lot of pain (much of it self-inflicted).

I’ve been reading much of his behavior as essentially avoiding confrontation a lot of the time (not all the time - he hasn’t entirely been a moral coward, and it seemed like he was starting to try to become a better person), rather than being mean-spirited, but as I said, this is rough. I still think Anders and Maria will ultimately turn out to be a lot better for each other than they are now, but at the moment in Anders’ case that’s more a matter of faith than anything I see on-panel.

I’ve always assumed that the metaphor of the bird’s eggs meant that Anders was going to crush Tina inadvertently, but seeing the scenario I’d imagined start this way is tough (particularly since out of the Tina, Maria, Anders, and Bjorn foursome the only one who so far hasn’t done anything obviously emotionally messed up to someone else “onscreen” is Tina).

I’m still really impressed with the ability of this comic to hold my attention in ways no other webcomic really does, though; it’s great work, and Tina in the last panel may win awards for “most expressive toon without a mouth.”

  41. Antsan Says:

Poor Tina. I hope for her, she is going to get very angry, anything else would just be not very healthy for her. You see, a broken heart is enough on itself, you don’t need headache additionally.

No comment on Anders. I’m not really sure what to think of that.

  42. Hec Says:

Ahh, he was talking to his friend and not maria…well he is still a dick!

  43. Gobble Stabler Says:

I actually don’t think Anders is to bad a person for this, sure its a dick move, and I certainly agree that he has no right to say that, but myself and my best pal talk like this all the time.
What a person dosent know cant hurt them, its true. Unfortunatly, Tina DID hear it.
My heart goes out to you Tina!

  44. Mary Says:

    aww :(
haha way to create characters you can feel bad for even after they’ve screwed their foster-sister’s boyfriend/father-of-child

  45. Alabaster Crippens Says:

I guess it’s a question of perspective. The instant reading it’s hard not to side with Tina, but then, when you banter with certain friends you say things massively more exaggerated, obscene and totally untrue, because there’s that understanding.

I have friends like that. And I know some things I’ve said, if they got overheard by the wrong person would be really hopeful. It’s the magic circle of the game, within it there’s an understanding, but it looks wrong from the outside.

    Maybe.

Anyway, I second the thought above, what’s great about the writing is that you can see these different angles, perspectives and shapes from it. The characters are fully formed, and multi dimensional…so we change our minds (and so do they).

Brilliant. (but I’m going to stop being effusive as I sound like a silly).

  46. Ashley Kromarek Says:

I dont feel bad for tina either, and rene, you do a good job showing how differently a person will act towards a best friend. everyone says things they dont mean, and things they do mean in a way that lacks tact, but maybe tina should stop being a lurker and creeping around everytime anders gets on the phone with someone and she wouldnt hear shit that hurts her feelings.

  47. megslegseggs Says:

This strip makes me dislike both Anders and Maria. :( I hope they never get back together and that Tina and Bjorn get together and win the lottery and have gorgeous, smart, kind children that don’t use other people.

Maybe they could even adopt Anders and Maria’s kid and save it from making horrible, mean-spirited, compulsive, whiny decisions at the expense of others after A&M turn out to only be capable of holding down jobs that even Mike Rowe is too scared to show on the Discovery Channel.

Yeah, yeah.. I know that life is raw and all that, but that doesn’t mean I have to handle this kind of fictional portrayal rationally.

  48. DC Says:

Man, this comic went from Anders Loves Maria to Everyone Hates Anders pretty abrubtly.

I still love the comic, mind you, I’m just sayin’.

  49. Rachel Says:

    Oh Anders!

  50. Steve Says:

    Man… Anders is a jerk. :/

  51. Miss Maria Says:

As much as Maria and Anders are making sillier and sillier mistakes, I really hope they end up together in the end. I think that is why every dramatic event like this makes me cringe, because I know that every passing day leaves a scar that is going to be on their relationship forever.

I sort of like that this happened, it means that Anders doesn’t intend to stay with Tina and Tina won’t keep him there.

The further away he gets from Tina, the closer he gets to Maria.

  52. RL Says:

:| I wouldn’t speak about ANYONE who’d been nice to me that way, even if I couldn’t stand them, and the fact that he’d speak that way about the woman he’s been sleeping with to ANYONE is horrifying (to me personally, at least). I’m casual with my best friend, and we have foul, foul mouths, but… no, we’re not that bad.

Honestly, that sort of crap behaviour is something I previously would have reserved for the ass who punched Maria. I thought Anders was an ass before, but I always had that, “Well, he’s confused, and maybe he doesn’t get why Tina’s acting the way she is…” in the back of my head. Now I don’t.

“HAR HAR HAR, I’ve taken advantage of a girl’s home and body, and she totally WORSHIPS me! I’m AWESOME!”

  53. Rebecca Says:

Heehee, Rene! Did you do this just to make everyone here explode with anger at Anders?

Anyway, I -love- this strip. I don’t think Anders is more than a casual jerk, the same as everyone is a jerk. He’s just more confident, and he was talking to his friend. I talk shit to my friends like that and they understand the way you mean it because they’re your close friends.

Tina needed this anyway. She’s been given every other blinding signal the universe had to offer and she’s STILL trying it on with him, I’d be only half surprised if she still tried to make things work with him from here. If this actually makes her leave him, then it’s exactly what she needed.

Also, you are SUCH A SWEETHEART for linking my comic!

  54. neil Says:

Whatever, I’m still on Anders’ side here. I mean, he’s just calling it like it is. When you’re talking with your best friend and you don’t think anyone is watching or listening, you say the worst, most blatant truth. He’d never say that to tina’s face so it’s not like he’s being an asshole or anything, he’s only speaking his mind on something with his best friend.

  55. Madonna Says:

I completely didn’t even know he was talking to Lena. Now it all makes sense, and you know what? That’s how guys are. All you girls who hate Anders for LIFE now, tell your husbands or boyfriends that you’re leaving for a bit, set up a recorder, and have their best friend call. The tone and word choice, even the level of dickishness completely changes.

Sometimes, it’s the truth. Sometimes it’s just male pomp. Women do the same with their friends.

    As for Tina…

Doormats get stepped on. It is the natural order. If she grows a backbone, she won’t deserve this kind of thing. But until then, she sets herself up for this stuff.

    I still love Anders.

  56. xfoo Says:

    i had to look away
only made it to panel 4!

  57. Joshua Says:

    ouch

  58. Angelique Says:

I was shocked until you mentioned he was talking to Lena. Then it all made sense. That’s how he talks to her, we’ve seen this before. It’s hard for anyone who hasn’t experienced this to understand, I think. I see it every time I go over to my boyfriend’s friends house. The whole group of them insult each other, laugh at each other’s pitfalls, exaggerate to the extreme, and sometimes just make shit up about each other. At the end of the day though, there’s no hurt feelings because we all know it’s all in fun. That’s what’s going on here, they’re having a man to “man” talk about things that are going on, exaggerating, cracking jokes at others’ expense… unfortunately Tina won’t get this, the way many others here won’t get it, because she’s not a part of the group.

  59. xfoo Says:

ok i made it though, and i think tina’s only just sad that he’s not taking her

  60. Reiko Says:

WOW! What an ASS! I don’t care who he’s talking to, you don’t say stuff like that unless you mean it on some level.

  61. Centipede Damascus Says:

    What the hell, Anders?

I’ve been pulling for you despite your stupidity, and now you pull a dick move like this?

You need to get your face rearranged.

  62. Indigno Says:

I actually don’t mind Bjorn that much. Granted he’s flirting with the nurse, however all he’s actually said at this point is “Hey”. Also, Him and Maria hadn’t really gotten serious at this point in the story.

    And:

    1) Yeah, he did bang 15 year old Maria. I don’t know what the age of consent is like in Sweden, though, and in some parts of the USA it’s 16. Besides, she was into him to begin with, and she snuck out to meet with him, and he gave her the opportunity to back out.

    2) Oh, come on. Tell me you wouldn’t make fun of Lennart the midwife.

  63. Maxx Miller Says:

Wow, Anders screws up again. But I can’t fault the guy TOO much, I’ve been there, talking with a friend about things I don’t really mean just to feel connected. Still, poor Tina. You’d think Anders would learn to watch his back a little after the camera-phone incident.

  64. k Says:

shiiiit. this is all i have ever wanted from anders but i feel bad for tina, even though i find her a little repugnant.

    well done rene.
also, i may wish to do an interview with you for a local rag if you are interested?
i will tell alex the details as my internet access is a little sporadic at the moment.

  65. Rene Engström Says:

Sure thing k. Alex was trying to arrange for me to come to do a meet-up in Australia sometime in the future. I could use a little publicity in your parts! :) A good chunk of ALM readers are over on your side of the planet.

  66. the girl Says:

Wow. I now quite honestly HATE him.

  67. Mandiiv Says:

OOOOH, he’s talking to Lena! That makes so much more sense, as I was honestly surprised by his dialogue — while he can be a jerk, that just seemed really exagerated and not even the way he normally speaks.

But him talking to Lena… yeah, now I imagine his voice having a completely different tone than when I thought he was talking to Maria. Still harsh for poor Tina; though the dialogue now reads as sacrastic playful banter rather than sardonic jokes at Tina’s expense, there’s still truth in it… but she probably needs to hear it, one way or another.

As much as I love Anders as a character… Tina vengence would be awesome.

  68. christina Says:

Is it just karma for Tina boning her foster sister’s baby-daddy? Or is Anders just kind of a jerk? I think a little bit of both, probably.

  69. Starline Says:

I still like Anders, he’s speaking the truth. Yeah, its in a dickish way, but its honest. Tina has to stop kidding herself and grow a frikken spine.

  70. Jen Says:

As much shitting on Anders that is going on, people you gotta know that Tina had this coming. I mean, she knew he was involved with Maria, and drunk or no, it’s not cool to go after a dude (which she did!) who is not only involved with someone, but fathering their child. She is a right bitch by my standards and deserves every bit of crapstorm coming her way.
Though as she’s hearing this, I know if I were in this position (which I never would be), I would act like I never heard it and do something upon his departure like give him ex-lax laced chocolates or some such. Just a little f-you goodbye gift.

  71. Annika Says:

Ooohh, you can just see Tinas heart breaking.

  72. Dain Says:

    Poor Tina…

  73. Keaton Says:

    Anders. >:(

  74. Bex Says:

    Helvete Anders!

  75. Ray Says:

Rene is just doing what she does best. Portraying her characters as real, flawed human beings.

As much as the things he is saying make him out to be a dick, Anders is only human.
    …Only human.

  76. Margaret Says:

I don’t like the direction this is going in. It seems like the conflict is ending, it makes things less interesting.

  77. Dain Says:

Margaret I don’t agree with you! I want that this conflict is ending I want that Anders and Maria are happy together! (I don’t want the comic ends!)

  78. Su Says:

Seriously, not a big surprise since we all know Anders is the world’s biggest douche. Also, if he does shit to Maria he’ll do it to Tina. Despite Maria’s efforts earlier, I’ve grown attached to Tina so I’m setting myself for another soul crushing moment up ahead.

  79. Alex F. Says:

kirstie was forced to admit sympathy for tina, so i’m a satisfied customer today!

  80. Katya Says:

I think it’s not so much the vocab he uses in saying it (which obviously is gonna be less tactful because he’s talking to Lena) as the actual content that upsets me. It’s not that Tina’s hearing this that pisses me off, but the revelation that Anders has known this all along- known that he’s totally using Tina (who, yes, has done bitchy things) and is okay with it. You could argue that his tone on the phone only makes it SOUND like he’s ok with it because he’s being crass with his best friend, but the fact that he’s still there, at Tina’s house, sleeping with her, etc proves that he is.

Yeah, yeah, we all love the flawed characters, people aren’t perfect, and I’m with everyone in loving that everyone in the comic makes mistakes, no one is a complete bad guy or good guy, blah blah blah. But seriously, Rene, throw us a bone! Let’s have at least ONE strip a week that highlights the characters’ redeeming virtues, please? I can’t stand strip after strip of various characters treating the others like crap. I’m losing hope.

  81. Olga Says:

No sympathy for Tina here! That’s how much of a bitch I am.

It sucks hard.. but probably not as hard as having someone you’re having a baby with have sex in front of you. I always thought Anders was an ass.. and I actually respect him more for being so loving to the stronger Maria and treating tina exactly how she’s asked to be treated.

As Dr. Phil says “you teach people how to treat you”. You act like a doormat and that’s what you are.

Anders is a d bag though obviously.. but anything for team maria!

I will never be swayed! haha!

  82. Mandiiv Says:

Awww, I adore Tina. I really don’t see at all how she’s deserving of hate, or how she’s a bitch. Maria has done far ‘bitchier’ things but, whatever. Maria was cheated on, therefore she’s been raised to saint-hood and all involved parties are irredeemable monsters. (I really should stop reading the comments XD Poor Tina!)

  83. RL Says:

Sleeping with your pregnant ex-foster-sister’s long-time boyfriend is pretty dang scummy, but as we’ve seen that that probably stems from some sort of deep-seated people-pleaser insecurity, I still feel hella bad for her getting treated like some sort of sex toy by Anders. So, so far Anders is lagging, as this is two scummy moves from him as opposed to everybody elses one. :(

  84. Maritza Campos Says:

This is why Anders needs someone like Maria. He needs someone who won’t put up with his crap.

  85. Genevieve Says:

I don’t like Anders’s use of “willing to please.” It sounds like he’s talking about a prostitute, or a dog, or something subhuman. Harsh! I hope Tina smashes his camera equipment. Or puts him in the hospital again, that would be funny. ALSO I HATE DR. PHIL

Ooh… I hope Tina doesn’t try to come crawling back to Maria after this. Honestly, I think she’s probably just made a string of really bad relationship decisions similar to this in her past, which Maria may hold against her. But, what I’m saying is that dysfunction like this doesn’t spring up overnight, and clearly there’s been drama before. So, I feel bad for Tina having low self-esteem even though I have no idea why she would have it, but she’s looking to be enabled to lower her own worth is what it looks like to me. Maybe she has a martyr syndrome?

Anders is being an ass and it’s been pretty apparent from his behaviour. And I don’t want to blame his upbringing because I don’t know his parents, or how they raised him. Sometimes a perfectly good kid morphs into an asshole, and what can you do? He kind of wants to be seen as mature, but not really be mature. Tina basically took a really bad decision that both of them made (equally bad considering one is Maria’s babydaddy and one was her foster-sister, but since I don’t know how long they were living together as sisters and Maria tagged Tina’s house, I hold Anders more accountable) and then dealt with all the consequences (I would guess including socially) while Anders has been relatively free of them. Regardless, whether the person is there or not, you don’t talk shit about someone who takes you in, feeds you, etc. rent-free WHILE YOU ARE STILL LIVING THERE AND STILL PHYSICALLY INSIDE THEIR HOUSE. Baaaaaaad move.

I also still think Maria is immature, Bjorn is immature, and Johan is a martyr, as well, so I’m not on anyone’s team right now. Well, I’m on Team Rene. :)

  86. A-non-Mousy Says:

This sure sparked a lot of comments….

Well, before this, I really liked Anders/Tina, but now Anders just doesn’t deserve her (he’s still better than Maria though, IMO)…. And the only other character I really like is Johan… so since the kiss on April Fools’ Day was a joke, I’m going with Johan/Tina now. Only people left I don’t hate in some amount.

  87. Marissa Says:

Anders, Anders, Anders… haven’t you learned that when you do stupid shit, people might be watching/listening in?

    He is SO thick.

  88. Paige Says:

Genevieve, I completely agree with the ‘not talking shit about someone when you live in their house’ part. You need to go to a pay phone, or something. A really sick part would be if he was using her phone, and racking up some long distance calling Lena.

Even if you KNOW that guys (and also girls, to be honest) can act stupidly around their friends and say some pretty mean things, this is still a harsh way to find out about it, and Tina probably doesn’t even know he’s talking to Lena, he could be speaking to her mother for all she knows.

I must say that I totally sympathize with Tine, backbone or no. When you like someone that much, it can be so hard to tell them no, even if you consciously know that is what you should be doing. I sincerely hope that Tina takes this as a wakeup call, and doesn’t just let it slide.

It’s very hard and very painful to grow a backbone and use it, so I hope she’s ready. :P

  89. Olga Says:

I’m like the only one that hates spineless people. I also hate spineless people IRL so it’s just me I guess.

I will say that if she gets a backbone I’ll like her more.. if she lets it go by the wayside there will be NO HOPE for me EVER liking her. Ever.

  90. Rene Engström Says:

Just to let you guys know, Friday’s update will be up in about an hour. Maybe an hour and a half.

  91. Cheap Shot Says:

It breaks my heart. I look at the Anders who called out to a neighbor and shouts how happy he is to be having a baby with Maria, and now he seems to be…he’s completely shed the things that were keeping him down before. He had a lack of confidence and wanted to prove himself…and it seems that having someone like Tina with him for a while has gone to his head.

It’s good that he’s gained some confidence, but too much is a bad thing. Knock him down a peg Rene!

  92. Indigno Says:

I want to hear the other side of this conversation.

  93. Annabeth Says:

And the next panel shows us reaching for the axe… :p

  94. Ashley Kromarek Says:

Olga, why did you have to go and quote dr. phil? WHY?
