#132 - Klop Klop Klop

Monday, March 31st, 2008

It really does sort of sound like galloping horses.

Well it is really nice to be back! Sorry the strip was so late getting up, as you can see I have been working on other things. And holy moly, I have a store now, can you believe it? There were some minis left over from the Thing so I will be selling those until supplies run out. Go grab them if you want over in my fancy, new web butique! You can read samples of it here and here.

I’ll put up the facebook video in a minute. Right now I am going to take a much needed tea break.

Oh yes, and BIG thanks to:
Luke
Paul
Patrick
KC
Sam
and Meredith for the internet’s greatest guest week ever. And for giving me a much needed holiday from the harsh realities of juggling a webcomic and 2 small babies. I can’t tell you how awesome it is to listen to screaming on one end of the phone and to just be able to (politely) hang up and go watch a rock concert.

  3. Chuck Says:

    Danm right he is…

Well, this really sumarizes how I see Maria/Bjorn relationship… :P

Good to have you back Rene! (although the guest week had so much awesomeness that it’s hard to describe…)

  4. Mandiiv Says:

That is a freaking adorable comic for some reason. I squealed at the ‘klop klop klop.’

  5. dario Says:

    got myself a mini! :-)

  6. katie Says:

yeah it pretty much sums that one up. he’s holding her arm while she’s scared and as soon as its good news ‘you can go now’ *shakes head* oh maria

  7. Kurt Says:

Being the daddy of two kids, that “hmmm…hmm….” phase while they look for the heartbeat is kind of nerve-wracking (for me anyhow).

To me, it didn’t sound like a “klop klop”. More like a “whoosh whoosh whoosh” (imagine submarine propellers).

I’d like to add my voice to the chorus of folks welcoming you back; this is really the best webcomic out there, stylish and emotionally resonant. The fill-ins were nice (especially the first and last), but there’s no substitute for the real deal.

Bjorn hitting on the receptionist is absolutely in line with how I’ve always seen him, and it’s particularly in line with his (very wrongheaded) reply to Maria at the bridge when she invited him to talk about how things were actually rather complex in part because of the baby. Instead of replying to the implied question, which is kind of asking of some discussion of stuff that, y’know, involves Maria, he framed his reply as all about him, essentially saying that it wasn’t a big deal because his choices for women at his age aren’t so great (note that this is just from his extremely narcissistic point of view).

Bjorn is - as the flashbacks make clear - not a character who has grown or changed from the person who has always been about Bjorn first and foremost and has always relied on Maria’s insecurities to give him an “in” with her. But this is a comic fundamentally about two characters who are obviously growing and changing, and I’m glad to watch that journey.

Again, welcome back, and thanks for having us all along for the ride.

  9. Sarah Says:

Well, now that Maria and Bjorn have slept together and even though the whole thing was kinda precipitated by Anders (though Maria and her family shouldn’t be entirely without blame)… anyway, now that things are kinda back to being kinda sorta even between the both of them, I have to say, it’s nice to see Maria contacting Anders and the baby starting to bring the two of them back together. Gosh, I can’t wait ’til the baby gets here!

  10. Hec Says:

Even though Maria has not made many great decisions in the past, I am very glad to see that she is showing eagerness to include Anders. I just hope he takes this moment to absorb the same excitement Maria has and not bring up argumentative issues from the past.

Bjorn can just go screw himself. >=)

Hey I loticed that ontop of the page it reads Anders loves maria again! Are you hinting something? =)

  11. Joy Says:

It was well worth it. We missed you.

  12. Hannah Says:

    This just made my day.
    Welcome back!

  13. Rene Engström Says:

Thanks guys! It is really nice to be back! :) The story has had so many disruptions, I look forward to just getting a few weeks of undisturbed ALM story out.

  14. Amanda Says:

    It’s almost sad, really.

  15. Toom Says:

    >>I can’t tell you how awesome it is to listen to screaming on one end of the phone and to just be able to (politely) hang up and go watch a rock concert.

The rest of the York contingent and I are most happy to be of service. Come back anytime!

  16. Toom Says:

(I’m at work at the moment so I can’t check, but I can’t remember whether or not I bought a mini off you; could you save me one in case I didn’t?)

  17. kaiki Says:

Welcome back as well, as good as the guest week was(and it was really good) It’s fantastic to see you back in the saddle =D

  18. Olga Says:

YAY! Happy to see you back! I’m stoked about my minicomic!!

Make t shirts now.. and also pants.

  19. Rita Says:

I didn’t read it as Bjorn hitting on the receptionist, and thought the “hey” was to stave off the awkwardness of being a strange man standing in the corridor.

  20. Casey Says:

This definitely follows the rule of this narrative: that the baby is an attracting/repairing force in the relationship.

  21. charchum Says:

olga! what a great idea about pants. i think it’d be brilliant to have panties!! with tina right on the butt, for when i fart, i will be farting on her.

  22. Amanda Says:

I always thought it sounded like a submarine. :)

  23. Annabeth Says:

You know Rene, it is really creepy how your comic seems to coincide with my life. Just this past Tuesday I went with a friend for an ultrasound, and I heard the baby’s heartbeat. Gah!

On the other hand, it WAS an amazing experience that I would never give up :)

  24. James Says:

Welcome back, Rene! Guest week was awesome, but I’m so happy to be seeing your lovely art again.

I felt sorry for Bjorn for all of two seconds. What a guy!

  25. Nicolas Says:

    Fö’ hellllllllvete Björn!

  26. Tapelia Says:

Having just made this discovery I must share it with everyone - did anyone else know that ‘bork, bork, bork!’ is a language option on google?!?!

  27. Hec Says:

Oh I GOT to google that!

  28. Laura Says:

The “bork, bork, bork” on google is a reference to the Swedish Chef from the Muppets. (Wait–Swedish Chef, what’ve you been up to?!)

  29. Kat Says:

This is the first time I’ve ever felt sorry for Bjorn.
