Oh man, panel 3 is awesome. She’s such a doormat, but the way she tries to keep smiling actually makes me feel bad for her.
Also: last panel looks like “I just solved Fermat’s last theorem while doing anal” to me (yes, I know it’s been solved).

It’s always tremendously awkward at this point. This is where you really *want* the girl to give up and say “no, please, let’s just… this is not going to work.” Tina is going to feel weird and upset if it doesn’t work out, because it would be- in her eyes- a failure on her part. So even though it hurts, she wants to continue… to make it work. Anders realizes this ISN’T gonna work and doesn’t want to hurt her, but there’s no easy way to back out without the situation becoming more awkward. When a girl continues encouraging you in between shrieks of pain and sobbing, that’s just…
Well, Ander’s expression in the last panel sums it up. Unless you’re a sadist, it’s both awkward and disturbing. And if that doesn’t kill his boner, he’s a Man of Steel.

I think I’ve figured it out! Tina has a rare and previously unknown form of osteoporosis. It’s a rapidly progressing strain that starts by dissolving the vertebra. This is why just a month ago she was all bad-ass and kicking Anders out of the gas station, but now seems to have almost no spine at all. (This also helps explain how someone so inert could have caused Maria so much childhood trauma.) Come April, she will be a virtual sea slug. A sexy, sexy sea slug. Fortuitously, this should make the borking a bit less uncomfortable.
PS. As a founding member of the Anders-Is-A-Douchebag Party, I nominate sthak as our Presidential candidate. Our caucus will be in March. Our platform revolves around protecting the vulnerable sea-slug from would-be poachers.

Yeah, Maria is carrying his child, but it’s pretty well established both of them are breaking away from their personal relationship, even though they’re reluctant.
My dream scenario is:
Anders gets hit by a bus.
Anders realizes Tina deserves to be treated with respect (i.e. making it clear if she’s just a replacement Maria until they get back together in a big romantic brouhaha or whatever)
Anders and Maria work stuff out while he’s stuck in full-body traction.
Anders gets better in time to hold his baby at his/her birth.
Happy happy family time- even if it’s not a perfect nuclear family of Maria and Anders.

Tina isn’t being forced into this, she’s *enthusiastically* encouraging Anders even when he wants to back off, and Anders clearly isn’t unaware that she’s in pain. It’s anal sex. The first time isn’t often rainbows and lollipops, it’s often searing pain and okay well let’s try longer and see if the pain stops and oh my God ouch again. And seriously, look at the facial expressions in today’s comic and tell me that it isn’t funny, especially Anders’ expression in the last panel. He looks positively horrified! Keep it up, Rene. You’ve really captured the follies of the bedroom in these past few comics.

Dude- BORING? How can Anders being hit by a bus and then getting his emotional ass kicked be boring? I’m all for seeing him be trapped in a full body cast between Tina, Johan and Maria. A fight breaking out over his body…. People turning on him and punching him in the face repeatedly, perhaps. Or tickling his feet mercilessly… Maybe his mom and Anna making out in a corner and making sardonic comments…. What happened to his best friend? She should totally come stomping in, stopping the ruckus, and slap him in the face for being such a douche.
…besides which, divorced people tend to be kind of… um… angry and overdramatic. By “happy happy family time” I meant Anders/baby and Maria/baby.

I understand that thats how these things work, but it is still pretty consistent with Tina being pissed the morning after their first encounter and then breaking down and asking about coffee etc. People who can’t stick up for themselves piss my off so bad, just because it is frustrating to feel badly for them constantly. Tina is exactly like my best friend.

I’m beginning to think that the key words in describing Anders should be “shallow” and “self-centered”. He doesn’t seem to be particularly self-aware and tends to take people at their word, even when their actions (or as here, their physical appeareance) would seem to give lie to the word. And in those moments where he does think about things, he tends to filter things through his own perceptions of The Way Things Should Be of focuses on making amends at the cost of ignoring what he actually did to offend (or more importantly, why he did it.).
I mean, Maria may be similarly self-centered and shallow (with an extra dose of impulse control issues), but she seems to be a lot more aware of her own faults.

i feel sorry for tina. she must have very low self esteem if she’s willing to be used in such ways. anders plots how he’s going to try and get tina back while fucking tina, and she is so desperate and disallusioned that she even knows anders is only using her and doesn’t care for her but still follows him like a sad, love-struck puppy. anders told her flat out that he would only end up hurting her, but her mind won’t let her believe him as she fosters the hope that he will “come to his senses” and realize he loves her.
anders needs to stop loving one woman while fucking another.

Let me sort of quantify my previous statement by saying, I am not enthused about butt sex. I find it disturbing? Other people’s bedrooms are none of my business, and bork on if you can dig it. I just don’t get it. It’s a posterior. Poo comes out of that! So maybe my reaction of “OMG STOP NOW CHRISSAKES” is a little over the top due to my own personal beliefs? I think many of the others may be experiencing the same reaction for the same reason.
I never thought Tina a doormat due to the seemingly unwanted borking. I think she’s trying to be sexy by trying something out for her partner, I just don’t think Anders OR Tina has the emotional maturity in the relationship to go, “Whoa, that, uh… that ain’t workin’,” and move on to position 2B or what have you.

Hm.
I note a lot of hostility towards the characters. I don’t see anyone here as a douche, doormat, asshat, etc. I’ll explain.
Anders sees, essentially, no chance of Maria taking him back - and while a few days ago this seemed to be a good thing (Maria was exhibiting one of the worst qualities of humanity - jealousy), it having been cemented by his new pseudo-relationship with Tina has him both anxious and uncertain. He likely sees perhaps a working, strained relationship with Maria for the sake of raising the child, but no romantic future.
He may, of course, be wrong, mind you.
Meanwhile, Tina sees this, and wants to hold onto Anders. I don’t know enough of her history to make a judgment, but she seems to have a level of codependency to deal with. She doesn’t want to fail in his eyes, and, cynically, doesn’t really believe the accident was accidental - any more than she sees his coming to her place to help clean up as completely noble. She’s willing to bear the pain, but she can’t really take it.
Anders doesn’t see all the motivations here - all he sees is mixed signals, and in his emotionally confused state is unsure of whether to stop and waste her, as she obviously sees it, valiant effort to attempt anal, or to stop out of sympathy.
The question of a doormat is irrelevant; she figures that if she can hold onto him long enough, he’ll get over Maria. She, apparently, isn’t privy to the title of the comic.
Bjorn and Maria, on the other hand - well, that’s another chestnut for another strip.

Side note:
Most of my thinking hinges on the idea that most people are generally good, but that strong emotions and personal motivations tend to blur the line between a good and bad decision. This is exemplified in Maria’s jealousy-inspired vandalism of Tina’s house. She thought she was sending a message to Tina, thus preserving her relationship with Anders.
The goal was proper, but with the high emotion, the execution was flawed.
In all, I think Rene’s doing a fan-frelling-tastic job in character development and in delivering high-believability synthetic emotional interaction with her comic. Most of the comics I read because they’re funny. This one, I read because it’s deeply cathartic - I mean, everyone’s made a bad decision; it’s not often you get to understand, objectively, why a decision is bad.
