It’s been awhile since I’ve been able to bring up this old incident again. Bet you thought I forgot didn’t you?

  1. Cherie Says:

Whoa! Did she eat the bad mushroom?

  2. Dain Says:

Poor Johan. Again a great comic Rene!

  3. bridget Says:

    Oh noes!
The copious swearing is definitely how I cope with panicking as well.
    But I digress, OH NOES!

  4. katie Says:

oh no! obviously she lives but man, this really hammers in that johan always is and always had been looking out for her. *sniff*

  5. Ally Says:

okay. psycho, but good big brother. not as if anyone else in her family had been looking out for her.

  6. Annika Says:

    hänger inte med…

  7. Rene Engström Says:

Annika go back somewhere around strip #60.

  8. Kelly Says:

    THE SPIRIT OF THE BEEHIVE

  9. spastic Says:

*i* forgot about this. good think you directed me to comic 60. ok so maria’s a bit of a brat, isn’t she? it’s one thing after another with her. i can relate to johan, having younger siblings that i try to look out for - they don’t always *want* looking after, even if they do need it. granted, these kids had a tough life, but maria is still the same brat today. i bet she never had counseling.

i can’t wait for the court case! it’s going to be a major media spectacle, isn’t it? i hope anders gets off with nothing, counter-sues and then gets paid big-time for agreeing to television interviews!

  10. Amalie Says:

Er det fra da Maria var bare en liten jente?

  11. Magali Says:

    What a brat she is!

Poor Johan, all woried about his little sis! (I like him more and more)

  12. Rene Engström Says:

Amalie: Stämmer. Maria är typ 6 år gammal här. Du hittar början på det här äventyret här.

  13. Casey Says:

    ruh roh

    flashbacks within flashbacks.

  14. Justin Says:

Hm, this strip reminds me of something.

  15. Rene Engström Says:

Justin… man that is some disturbing shit.

  16. docfrance Says:

Somehow I get the feeling that Maria’s life has been nothing but a series of bad impulsive decisions.

  17. Shannon D. Says:

Mmmmmmm, impulsive decisions make for a delicious story line!!

  18. Liz Says:

wow, i’m a bit slow, i just woke up so i suppose it’s allowed. For a second i thought she was doing the suicide thing becasue of Bjorn’s kind of rejection. Semi glad to know that’s not the case, but still…poor stubborn little Maria.

  19. Hannah Says:

Johan reminds me so much of my brother, I love him.

  20. MelloYello Says:

man… going back through the archives I’ve realized that I don’t think I personally would ever date Maria. I mean, jesus, the moment they set foot in her hometown it just got UGLY and continues to do so.

  21. Ashley Says:

Being a brat is part of growing up. I know more kids who were little shits all throughout life than were good and did what people told them. Maria seems pretty normal, she just doesn’t seem to grow out of it. How sad for her.

  22. Madonna Says:

This is my childhood, except I was Johan. My parents were absent and I got to be Mom, Dad, Police, Judge, Jury, and Executioner.

    Poor wonderful Johan.

  23. Holly Says:

I dunno if my brain can parse a flashback within a flashback. J/K, as long as a a third level of flashback isn’t introduced I’m sure I can manage.

  24. Fnord Says:

Is it too callous to point out that there’s some pattern in Johan being so protective of his little sister, and by doing so pushes her to do all sort of crazy stuff. Just saying.

  25. Christi-Maria Says:

I’m sorry Ashley but I’m gonna have to disagree with you. Being a brat is not (general) a part of growing up. Yes, most kids sometimes disobeyed their parents but that is not necessarily being a brat, that’s being a kid. Being a brat is when you NEVER listen, you disobey everyone and make it hard for you and your family and NEVER learn and they continue to do things that hurt them and people around them without a second thought. I was never like that, my big brother was never like that and there are several people I know who were never like that. We did things to get in trouble, most kids do but we learned from them. A brat never learns and unfortunately, even at my age, I know a few adults who are still brats and they haven’t learned a single thing.

Some people grow out of bratty-ness but not all. And yes Maria, seems to be the latter right now, but once again I’ll reserve judgment until this double-flashback is over.

  26. Craig Says:

I hope it gave her berserker rage before she passed out…

  27. Rosie Says:

    lol @ Craig. I guess we’ll see.

BTW Rene, I love Maria’s long hair :)

  28. Annabeth Says:

    VIKING MARIA!!!!!!!!!

  29. spastic Says:

she is prettier with the long hair. she should grow it back. and not sleep with pervy bjorn. if she lets tina have anders she’s just plain stupid. can you imagine that scenario? where anders and tina come over to pick up the baby for shared custody? i’d borrow hastings’ (see ugly hill) wife’s shovel and smack someone with it in that situation myself.

  30. Duke-Thane Says:

I really like John expressions in these panels. it’s so sad!
I hope your Boyfirend get better real soon rene!

  31. kasha Says:

it’s funny how so many people are quick to call maria a brat or insinuate that she is sort of loose for sleeping with bjorn, but anders can cheat on her and it’s still justifiable. i wonder if the gender of the readers sort of skews their perception of the characters. i think anders and maria each have a lot of good in them, and sometimes mean well but their actions are contrary to how they intend things to turn out. they’re equally flawed, and really the only way to learn in life is through trial and error. sleeping with bjorn and eating the mushroom, they’re things that johan was trying to protect her from, but people don’t often do as they’re told.

  32. katie Says:

kasha, I dont really recall many people justifying anders sleeping around, in fact i think pretty much everyone thinks he’s a douche.

  33. katie Says:

    also. god dammit justin.

  34. kasha Says:

i seem to remember a few choice comments saying that they would have done the same thing, or something to that effect, but it would be hell for me to try to find them again. i just remember that reading them was a little appalling, personally.

  35. Craig Says:

haha Katie is right! everyone was mad at Anders(i know he’s not a real person)

  36. alex f Says:

well kasha, plenty of people don’t think maria’s a brat. the magic of free thought is that you’re bound to have a full spectrum of opinions in any situation.

  37. Kate Says:

:C Maria’s not loose! (she is kind of bratty, tho)

  38. Daniel Says:

Haha sorry I wasn’t around posting when anders slept with tina, but when I saw it I didn’t think it was completely condemnable. I mean, maria & johan were spying outside the window, right? The issue had been essentially not respecting boundaries (the vandalism, maria’s family’s treatment of anders), and they were still grossly violating them. (at least that’s how i remember it :/) additionally anders had said something to the effect of “it’s over” to himself. certainly that doesn’t mitigate maria’s hurt, but as readers we’ve got to at least consider that he meant it. (don’t we?)

  39. Sarah Says:

Personally, I’m not especially mad at Anders. I think he and Tina and Maria and Bjorn are better matched to each other. That’s not to say that, were I in Maria’s place I wouldn’t be just as devastated, but as a reader and looking at this scenario as part of a story, I think the way Rene has matched Anders and Maria with partners who complement them so well (I honestly like Anders/Tina and Maria/Bjorn better than Anders/Maria right now) is an intriguing enough twist to make me wonder what (if indeed anything) is going to be powerful enough to get the two of them back together again, and how the upcoming trial and the upcoming baby will factor into everything.

  40. Nathan Says:

so she took the mushroom. tsk tsk tsk.

  41. kasha Says:

alex, i’m a huge supporter of free thought, i was just speculating out loud.

  42. Annabeth Says:

“When the men on the chessboard get up and tell you where to go and you’ve just had some kind of mushroom and your mind is moving low just ask Alice, I think she’ll know”

Sorry, just popped into my head :)

  43. Ashley Says:

Christi-Maria: I wasn’t saying brat as in spoiled little asshole, but more as in little brat kid. I never defied everything everyone told me to do either, I was pretty good because I didn’t like feeling like I was disappointing people. A lot of children do test their boundaries though, and some more than others… This was just my interpretation of people calling Maria a brat in this instance. As dumb as eating a bad mushroom is, I could see multiple little kids doing the same thing. -Who doesn’t want a magical fit of rage? Ha. However, like I said, Maria hasn’t grown out of this shit yet, so thats pretty sad for her.

  44. streever Says:

Hmm, at first, when Anders slept with Tina, I was thinking: HOW COULD HE.

And I thought: he totally dismissed Maria as if her feelings didn’t matter.

then it dawned on me: They don’t!

What right does she have to bear a grudge from when she was…. 11? Against Tina?

Tina seems like a fine person, trying to get by. Yes, maybe she was a bully to Maria in grade school, but Maria was a juvenile delinquent, getting drunk as her brother peed on their house.

It’s appropriate to forget the past, and move on….

That in no way makes Anders having sex with Tina right: and he compounds the wrong-ness of it by then thinking he can pretend it didn’t happen & go back to Maria.

But, I do think they BOTH are better off without each other. Maria is pretty immature, in a spiteful, vindictive way it seems, and Anders is immature in a hurt, emotional, impulsive way.

I think Maria comes out looking a little bit worse, but it’s situational. She IS pretty awful to him when they go to her family, but remember, she has NO desire to be there, and (immaturely) blames Anders for getting them there. If she had a normal boyfriend, none of that would have happened: his fame & his mother are what make it necessary.
