Saturday, January 12th, 2008Anders Loves Maria has received it’s very first review! And it’s not in Swedish or English, but Polish. It is really interesting reading how other cultures interpret the comic. One of the most interesting observations, something which I take completely for granted and not at all noteworthy, was the one joke I made about abortion way back when Maria first found out she was pregnant. I never even considered the fact that this could come across as shocking or even down-right offensive. But hey, freedom for our bodies, that’s how I roll. All in all the review was very positive. Here in Poland, since beginnig of 90 we have never ending fight about abortion. Right wing politicians treet it as a distract topic, or tool to look good in the eyes of polish caatholic church hierarchy. Last year they were trying to ban abortion at all, even in case of rape. stupid pricks

It may be dangerous to assume that Tina’s really the one being victimized here. Maria doesn’t like her and there may be a very good reason. The whole seduction of Anders may have simply been a way for her to do something mean to Maria.

so here goes my first comment (for your statistics: i’ve been reading so long that i’ve forgotten by which way i came from, it may have been from octopus pie but it also may be from somewhere else… and i’m from germany):
i think i don’t hate anders at the moment. i did hate him a few days ago, but to me it looks like he’s finally coming to his senses, sort of. i don’t think he can be blamed for hurting tina’s feelings, it’s not as if she didn’t know what she was doing, right?

I agree with Gwen.
I also think that Tina is being pretty unreasonable– what did she expect, hooking up with a clearly drunk guy who is currently angry at his pregnant girlfriend? The whole situation was trouble from the beginning; she shouldn’t have expected it to be meaningful to Anders.

Question for Rene: do you find all the hating on Anders influencing your decisions as far as plot goes, or even as far as characterization? In other words, are you tempted to portray a character that you (obviously, since you created him) care about more sympathetically now that you see how people are responding negatively to his actions in the story?

No the decisions are already made. The story is written. I can be tempted to change the story if someone guesses what’s going to happen, but I never do. I love Anders and Maria despite their actions. They are my babies.

Well, she’s either being delusional or manipulative. Did she honestly think that a drunken hook-up with a guy with a crazy-preggers girlfriend was the beginning of a serious romantic relationship? Honestly?
And Anders is being a bit of a dick to her so far, but at least it’s metaphorical this time. I can’t be too mad at him, since he’s probably pretty disgusted with himself. He does seem awfully determined to piss off everyone he knows in that little town, though. From my experience with small communities, that’s NOT a good idea.

I, for one, think Anders is doing the right thing. I’ve run out on plenty drunken hookups, but I’d never run out on my preggars girlfriend.

haha, oh my… I speak polish fluently but my reading is poor, so it took me maybe ten minutes to read that review. it’s well written and positive though.
I feel a little sorry for tina, no one likes to feel so used; but I’m more happy anders is pushing to be responsible for his new little family.

You know, its funny. On the first pannel anders holds the back of her head, a sign a “C’mere sweetie” and at the same time he is holding her breast. That is some confusing way of saying “I can’t” Anders is more confused than George W. Bush with a 3rd grade Math test.

Reading the old comic you linked above again i realised how much your drawing has improved. Mind the backgrounds had more detail back then but you seem to have found a uniqe and stunning style, that really appeals to me (also daily updates).
I’m beginning to feel sorry for Anders. Hope he finally grows up a little (or maybe not, drama is good

Anyway I am not at all offended by abortion. As I’ve said in a comment before, I actually think that would be the right decision (or adoption) as neither Anders nor Maria really come off as mature individuals. The thing that I really don’t like about Anders is how he’s thought about cheating on Maria before, after a previous argument. He also acts like a spoiled brat a lot of the time (bad parenting there). And Maria is… well she comes off as rather childish at times. Being a jealous bitch is a sure fire way to get a guy to break up with you. But after all that being said, I love this comic to death and I will follow it to the end.

I think it’s a case of Anders being a man-child. There are many little boys out there with grown up men bodies. Maria isn’t the most mature person either. There are a lot of little girls in women’s bodies too out there.

Probably up to 50% of Americans are against abortion (’Pro-lifers’) so I am not so surprised about that reaction. But I wasn’t - I personally thought that joke was funny
