#066 - 2007-11-05

Monday, November 5th, 2007

I go back to Sweden tomorrow morning British Columbia time. 24 hours, 4 flights, 3 heavy suitcases, 2 prams, 2 toddlers and 1 parent with Aviophobia (me) lugging all of us across the Atlantic. Mathematically it seems impossible but I am so very much looking forward to my own bed and boyfriend I don’t care.

Wish us luck!

EDIT: Ok I am home. Very, very jetlagged and sore, but home none-the-less. Thank you so much for the well-wishes and luck-givings.

I also noticed that the people at the Something Awful Forums were saying nice things about my comic and also noting how awful the English is. It is true I make mistakes all the time. Maria has a very everyday sort of language and that I try to translate into her speach. So sometimes, but not always, Maria makes mistakes on purpose. Anyways it is always a “trip” to see people discussing my comic.

Also Snicket, I love your avatar!

    GOOD LUCK ON YOUR TRIP

i started reading your work last week, and i just finished it. i must say is one of the best i have read, the character desing is very original and so is the story.

Oh p’shaw. You made it across once, you’ll make it back across.

Separate beds. Way to capture the awkwardness of staying with your lover at their parents’ house.

Also just digging again your depiction of spaghetti like limbs against the straight edges around the room.

[…] Yeah, that’s Hollywood’s version of romance; this is Sweden — we’ve only covered two days of story, and life hasn’t begun to get complicated yet. A brush with the law sends the couple to the far north, to Maria’s family, who treat Anders poorly (’cause let’s face it, he’s a pussy). Old crushes and old enemies enter, all concerned make bad decisions, and we’re reminded that nobody can hurt us as much as somebody you know loves you — but doesn’t like you very much right now. […]

OK, probably no one will ever read this since I’m posting so late, but in panel 3, Maria looks so much like Mell from Narbonic that I just can’t keep from commenting.

Some more translating fun, because I do so like doing it:

“Kukträsk” could be translated to “Cocksville”, in that it’s a little town named for the cock. Of course “träsk” in itself means “swamp”, and towns named something-träsk always get that extra pathetic, muddy backwater smalltown vibe.

I don’t know if there’s a real Kukträsk, but I live pretty close to a small village called Ollonfors. (”Dickhead river”.) For real.
